Tolkien&#8217;s books, &#8216;<em>Lord of the Rings&#8217;<\/em> amongst others, and means &#8216;<em>deeply cloven valley<\/em>&#8216;, referring to the Bot River valley lying between two mountains. \u00a0The wine estate Rivendell is owned by Austrian couple Heimo and Maria Talhammer, and they invited Chef Thomas to open the restaurant on their farm three months ago. \u00a0The restaurant building is set back on the estate, and is not visible from the road to Hermanus. \u00a0It was previously the tasting and functions venue, but the<!--more--><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Interior-Whale-Cottage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-63387\" alt=\"Rivendell Interior Whale Cottage\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Interior-Whale-Cottage-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Interior-Whale-Cottage.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Interior-Whale-Cottage.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Interior-Whale-Cottage.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Interior-Whale-Cottage.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Interior-Whale-Cottage.jpg?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a> wine tasting is now done in what was previously the Bistro closer to the entrance. \u00a0The exterior of the restaurant building does not provide any indication of what one is about to experience when one steps into the restaurant The lavender growing outside the building plays an important role for Chef Thomas&#8217; plating.<\/p>\n<p>The interior is dominated by the comfortable red upholstered chairs, feeling very Austrian, and was inherited from the former tasting room. \u00a0Most tables have a beige runner (but ours did not), on which a silver vase with a pincushion is placed. \u00a0There are material serviettes, and Fortis Hotelware cutlery, and tiny salt and pepper shakers. \u00a0 Garden tables and chairs encourage one to sit outside when the wind is not blowing, and the children of the patrons enjoyed the lawn outside, as well as the children&#8217;s menu offered.<\/p>\n<p>Chef Thomas moved to Cape Town from Austria almost thirty years ago, opening Buitenverwachting restaurant, and then opening his own restaurant The Blue Danube on New Church Street, an <strong>Eat Out<\/strong> Top 10 restaurant. From there he moved to Gardens, opening opposite Dunkley Square, and then to Wembley Square (Sinn&#8217;s Restaurant), and then to an unfortunate tiny outlet on Long Street. \u00a0 His Restaurant Manager Christopher Hakime has mainly worked in Hermanus restaurants, including Fisherman&#8217;s Cottage (for nine years), Tapas, La Vierge, and at The Restaurant at Newton Johnson, before moving to Rivendell Restaurant. \u00a0Our waitress was confident,and willing to assist, but was not knowledgeable about all the dishes. \u00a0She told us that the &#8216;<em>Soup de Jour&#8217;<\/em> was Butternut (R49), and the daily special was kingklip and salad, at R85.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Amuse-Bouche-Springbok-pie-Whale-Cottage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-63396\" alt=\"Rivendell Amuse Bouche Springbok pie Whale Cottage\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Amuse-Bouche-Springbok-pie-Whale-Cottage-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" deep-fried <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Kingklip-special-Whale-Cottage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-63392\" alt=\"Rivendell Kingklip special Whale Cottage\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Kingklip-special-Whale-Cottage-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>beetroot. \u00a0I found it hard to identify the content of the dish relative to the description by the waitress. \u00a0I chose the kingklip special (R85), which was served with a garden salad with walnuts, cherry tomatoes, feta, cucumber, olives, and hard boiled egg, having requested that the curry sauce coming with the egg be excluded. \u00a0It was beautifully plated, the lavender from the garden being used to add to the attractiveness of the dish, but the kingklip was too salty for my taste. \u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Hake-Whale-Cottage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-63393\" alt=\"Rivendell Hake Whale Cottage\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Hake-Whale-Cottage-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>My colleague chose the battered hake and chips (R79), topped with a sesame crisp, also served with a garden salad, home-made tartare sauce, and crispy chips, and it was the largest piece of served fish I have ever seen. \u00a0We laughed when we saw the shape of a whale in the served hake! \u00a0My colleague Hadjirah had to take half of the dish home with her, it was such a large portion.<\/p>\n<p>Starters range from R65 &#8211; R78, and include Thai fish cakes, beef carpaccio, marinated seared salmon trout, a crispy prawn salad, warm goat&#8217;s cheese wrapped in Black Forest ham, duck liver parfait (to order on a next visit), two salad options, and an interesting sounding mussel and Riesling soup. \u00a0Main courses range from R95 for filled chicken supreme to R175 for a crispy half a roast Pekin duck, another next try dish. One can also order Karoo lamb rack, grilled line fish on risotto, grilled fresh salmon trout, Karan beef sirloin, a fragrant beef curry, and Rivendell&#8217;s Fillet Rossini served with mushrooms and grilled duck pat\u00e9 (another future dish to order). \u00a0 An additional &#8216;<em>Bistro Favourites<\/em>&#8216; page offers even better value, including a mushroom risotto (R79), an ostrich burger (R85), a beef and Dijon mustard burger (R79), Red Thai chicken curry (R85), and veal Bratwurst (R75).<\/p>\n<p>For dessert the steal of the meal was the Decadent Dessert <em>&#8216;Medley&#8217;<\/em>, which was a taster of each of the other dessert dishes, for an <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Decadent-Dessert-Medley-Whale-Cottage.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-63397\" alt=\"Rivendell Decadent Dessert Medley Whale Cottage\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Decadent-Dessert-Medley-Whale-Cottage-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Decadent-Dessert-Medley-Whale-Cottage.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Decadent-Dessert-Medley-Whale-Cottage.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Decadent-Dessert-Medley-Whale-Cottage.jpg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Decadent-Dessert-Medley-Whale-Cottage.jpg?w=1250&amp;ssl=1 1250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Rivendell-Decadent-Dessert-Medley-Whale-Cottage.jpg?w=1875&amp;ssl=1 1875w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>unbelievable R65, which my colleague and I shared. \u00a0The dessert platter included a hazelnut mousse cake, vanilla pod cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e, guava sorbet, fruit slices, coffee ice cream, and custard, a colourful presentation. \u00a0Cake of the day costs R36, malva pudding and custard R49, dark chocolate fondant R54, duo of Belgian chocolate mousse R54, and ice cream and sorbet costing R16 per scoop.
