The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/tag\/pippa-de-bruyn\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>motivation for Cape Town&#8217;s top position is written by Pippa du Bruyn<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, who is a Cape Town-based\u00a0local travel writer and \u2018<em>destination expert\u2019, <\/em>including\u00a0author of a \u2018<em>Frommer\u2019s Guide<\/em>\u2019 to South Africa, and of\u00a0 \u2018<em>A Hedonist\u2019s Guide to Cape Town\u2019. \u00a0<\/em>De Bruyn surprisingly\u00a0exaggerates our restaurants as &#8216;<em>Michelin-rated<\/em>&#8216; fare, and in describing Dyer Island near Gansbaai as being in Cape Town. \u00a0Her laudation for Cape Town follows:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>&#8216;<span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>As your plane banks over\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/travel\/hotel\/36237\/Cape-Town-hotels.ht\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Cape Town<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, you see a city dwarfed by a mountainous spine that runs the length of the peninsula: a jagged, curved finger in a blue expanse that stretches almost 3,000 miles to the nearest landmass. The Gorinhaiqua named the Cape\u2019s iconic flat-topped mountain Hoerikwaggo (\u201csea-mountain\u201d), its flanks dropping in parts almost perpendicularly into the ocean; the surrounding valleys they called Camissa, or \u201cplace of sweet waters\u201d. The proximity of the mountain\u2019s fresh spring waters attracted the first European seafarers, and in 1652 the Dutch East India Company made the prudent decision to establish a supply station here.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div id=\"tmg-related-links\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Three centuries later the city that grew around the Company\u2019s garden <\/em>(sic)<em> is still dominated by nature, its sophisticated urban heart beating right in the middle of one of the world\u2019s biodiversity hotspots. You can go almost anywhere to experience the city\u2019s in-your-face beauty \u2013 adrenalin junkies plunge into the marine-rich waters around Dyer Island to go nose-to-nose with Great Whites; shoppers scoure\u00a0<\/em>(sic)<em> Woodstock for the latest in Afro-chic design, then quench their thirst with local craft beer; foodies are spoilt for choice in valleys carpeted with vines, where world-class chefs prepare Michelin-rated fare at bargain prices.<\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Cape Town is also a city that is rediscovering its heritage \u2013 replanting the Dutch kitchen garden that spawned the colony 363 years ago; creating walking routes that reveal the early days of the iniquitous slave trade. You can also follow in Mandela\u2019s footsteps, be guided by maps that highlight the city\u2019s architectural treasures, or take tours of its 17th-century underground canals.<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>Despite all this, tourism to Cape Town remains highly seasonal, which keeps a cap on development \u2013 and the number of beds. So like most things, it pays to plan ahead.<\/em><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>This is a city that has only really been open to the world for the last two decades, and it still offers excellent value for money and a sense of new discovery.
