* \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Etihad Airways and SAA have announced one of the benefits of their ‘strategic partnership’,<\/em>\u00a0in that\u00a0SAA is commencing flights between Johannesburg and Abu Dhabi<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0from 29 March, doubling the number of flights on this route. \u00a0Abu Dhabi is a hub, with access to India, the Middle East, and Asia.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The International Air Transport Association (IATA) predicts that the profit of its member airlines is expected to grow, due to the lower oil price and GDP growth. Airfares are expected to decrease by 5%.<\/p>\n

* \u00a0 The R 2 million Sun Star sculpture on Signal Hill has unleashed a debate<\/strong><\/a> about the role of corporate sponsorship in public art, its sponsorship by Sun International reflected in its name and visible on the solar power panel structure near the structure. \u00a0 Its 24 meter size makes it visible over parts of the Atlantic Seaboard and city centre. \u00a0The structure has been criticised for lacking merit and the ‘crass opportunistic commodification of the medium (Robben Island fencing). Corporate<\/em><\/span>\u00a0funding is welcomed in the arts, but what has to be guarded against is corporate propaganda in the guise of public art.\u00a0Nobody with public art insight would have supported this artwork being placed on Signal Hill. The by-law passed in March that enabled this structure to be installed without going through any review process is dictatorial’. \u00a0<\/em>When the project was accepted by the City of Cape Town World Design Capital 2014, the hotel group was not yet a sponsor. \u00a0In six months time the structure will be moved to a hotel property.<\/p>\n
