\"Nelon<\/a>Mandela Day will be celebrated around the world today, commemorating the birth-date of the late Nelson Mandela. The Western Cape will be celebrating the important date too.<\/p>\n

Amnesty International has announced that it plans to display a large tapestry, to be called ‘Flying Madiba’<\/i>, in honour of the late Nelson Mandela in the International Arrivals Hall at Cape Town International.<\/p>\n

The tapestry is still being made by Atelier Pinton in Aubusson in France, and measures 6 x 3 meters, as a partnership between Amnesty International and Cape Town International, with the support of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Celebrities Bono, John Legend, Peter Gabriel, Yoko Ono, and Stingfunding the tapestry.<\/p>\n

Minister Winde welcomed the tribute to Madiba: ‘This is a fitting tribute to Madiba, displayed prominently so as to welcome international visitors to our country. The tapestry will be unveiled on 10 December 2015, which is International Human Rights day. Madiba is one of the world\u2019s most celebrated human rights activists<\/em>‘.<\/p>\n

Earlier this week Minister Winde announced that a Madiba\u00a0Heritage Tourism Route would be developed in the Western Cape, reflecting Madiba’s connection to the province, based on SA Tourism’s Madiba-inspired tourism map and App. Five tourist attractions linked to Madiba will be signposted to allow visitors to follow in Madiba’s footsteps, including Robben Island, the City Hall, Drakenstein Correctional Services, Parliament, and Pollsmoor Prison.<\/p>\n

In New York the South African Consulate General and SA Tourism have organized a series of events to celebrate Mandela Day, including a Madiba-inspired travel package compiled by Sa Tourism, to our country.<\/p>\n
