\"Cape<\/a>To give wine lovers a taste of the excellent quality of wines to be\u00a0sold at the 31st Cape Winemakers Guild Auction at the Spier Conference Centre on 3 October, a tasting of the 55 wines takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre tonight.<\/p>\n

The focus of the Cape Winemakers Guild auctions is quality-crafted wines made by the select group of winemakers who form part of the elite Guild. Each of them makes a wine specifically for the Auction, and is branded and labeled as such. This year 34 red wines, 17 white wines, 3 M\u00e9thode\u00a0Cap Classiques, and one straw wine will be auctioned, and available for pre-tasting, representing a total of 2575 cases to be\u00a0sold.<\/p>\n

Guild Chairman and Paul Cluver Wines winemaker Andries Burger said about the Auction: ‘Great diversity with interesting blends and varietal wines in smaller volumes and case lots than in recent years, underscores our singular commitment to bolster creativity and setting new benchmarks that will improve the standing of South African wines<\/em>‘.<\/p>\n

The collection of Guild wines to be auctioned this year is a mix of classic wines and new styles, and was selected by means of a blind-tasting by Guild winemakers, and was laboratory-tested for meeting ‘wine-health<\/em>‘ standards. The Auction is a sought-after event for the top quality wines offered to wine collectors as well as to wine retailers.<\/p>\n

New wines at this year’s Auction are Bruce Jack’s\u00a0The Drift Farm ‘Die Kans Vate’<\/em> Single Vineyard Barbera 2013; Boplaas Daniel\u2019s Legacy Cape Portuguese Red Bend 2013, the first ‘Calitzdorp-style<\/em>‘ red blend of three classic Port varieties with Shiraz by Carel Nel; Duncan Savage’s Savage Wines Auction Red 2013, a Rhone-style red blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Syrah; and John Loubser’s Silverthorn Wines ‘Big Dog’<\/em> M\u00e9thode Cap Classique 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n

The three Cap Classiques at the Auction are by Graham Beck, Silverthorn Wines and Villiera, and the straw wine is from Boplaas. New vintages of red wines to be auctioned are\u00a0Boschkloof Epilogue Syrah 2013, Cederberg CWG Teen die Hoog Shiraz 2013, De Grendel Op Die Berg Pinot Noir 2013, Ernie Els CWG 2013, Etienne Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon Auction Reserve 2011, Hartenberg CWG Auction Shiraz 2013, Jordan Sophia 2012, Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2012, Paul Cluver Auction Selection Pinot Noir 2013, Rust en Vrede CWG Estate 2012, Boekenhoutskloof Syrah Auction Reserve 2013, Simonsig Heirloom Shiraz 2013, Saronsberg Die Erf Shiraz 2013, and Beyerskloof Traildust Pinotage 2013.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

White wines which will be auctioned are\u00a0Muscat de Frontignan from Adi Badenhorst; a Semillon Gris and Chenin Blanc from Andrea Mullineux; Sauvignon Blancs from Bartho Eksteen, De Grendel, Louis Nel, and Nitida; Semillon from Nicky Versfeld; Chenin Blanc from Miles Mossop; Chardonnays from Ataraxia Under The Gavel Chardonnay 2014, Jordan Chardonnay Auction Selection 2014, Paul Cluver The Wagon Trail Chardonnay 2014, and Waterford Estate Chardonnay Auction Selection 2011.<\/p>\n

Attendance at the Cape Winemakers\u00a0Guild 2015 tasting tonight costs R190. On 26 August the Auction wines can be tasted at The Nedbank Atrium in Sandton.
