It also crowned the first ever &#8216;Chefs who Share&#8217; Young Chef of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;Chefs who Share &#8211; the ART of Giving&#8217; idea was conceptualised by <strong>Opulent Living<\/strong> co-owner Barbara Lenhard (who looked very glamorous) with Chefs Rudi Liebenberg and Bertus Basson, all 14 leading participating chefs as well as 7 sommeliers giving their time and expertise for the Gala Dinner at no charge.\u00a0In the past two <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image84.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-72051\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image84-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image84.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image84.jpg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image84.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>years R4 million net has already been raised through the last two Chefs who Share events.\u00a0The monies raised from ticket sales (at R3000 a head and sold out on the same day as tickets went on sale), as well as from the Auction benefit Make a Difference Leadership Foundation and Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Without the support of main sponsor Mercedes-Benz the event could not have been held in the past three years. Swiss International Air Line was also acknowledged for its sponsorship, bringing Chef Reto Mathis to Cape Town, and taking the winning Young Chef of the Year to Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The chefs were paired as follows, each of them having one top Sommelier, and one Young Chef of the Year Finalist as an assistant too:<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>* \u00a0 <a attending a &#8216;Chefs who Share&#8217; Gala Dinner is the surprise of which table one will sit at and who the chefs will be cooking for<a Chef Chantel&#8217;s mother Marie and her partner also sat at our table, as did long-standing acquaintances Charles and Elmien de Kock, and wine expert Juliet Cullinan, who now lives in Monaco.<\/p>\n<p>Chefs Scot and Chantel prepared a four-course menu especially for their three tables of 36 guests in total, each set of chefs preparing a separate menu for their tables. The brief was to prepare a starter with a fish element, a soup course, a main meat course, and a chocolate-based dessert, each chef team having carte blanche in its choice of dishes served. Food and Beverage Manager for the evening Gavin Ferreira of the Twelve Apostles Hotel &amp; Spa did a fantastic job in coordinating the food coming out of the kitchen for the 252 guests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image93.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-72062\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image93-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image93.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image93.jpg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image93.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>The starter course at our tables was presented to the table with a display of liquid nitrogen creating clouds of smoke. \u00a0The bowl of tuna tataki\u00a0and tartare, organic chipotle smoked by the La Colombe pastry chef, \u00a0avocado, shiitake, kataifi, and confit lemon looked beautiful, and had been created by Chef Scot and his team. Chef Scot is an avid tuna fisherman. His dish combined a French Asian background with a South American influence, he explained in his notes for the dish. This course was paired by Sommelier German Lehody of Mosaic with Glen Carlou Unwooded Chardonnay 2014.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by a most unusual soup dish created by Chef <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image94.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-72063\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image94-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image94.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image94.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/image94.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Chantel and her team, for which the plating was done in bowls in the kitchen, which I had photographed there. The name of the dish &#8216;<em>The Alchemist&#8217;s Infusion<\/em>&#8216; was apt! Chefs Scot and Chantel came to our table regularly, and were kind in allowing me to photograph their dishes in the make-shift 42 meter kitchen alongside the City Hall, shared with the other six chef teams, as the lighting inside the City Hall was not ideal.
