* \u00a0 The announcement last week of the discovery of a new hominid species Homo Naledi at The Cradle of Humankind at Maropeng,\u00a0and its international media coverage by National Geographic<\/strong> in particular, could give Tourism to our country a much-needed boost.<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

*. \u00a0The 31st Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild will be held at Spier on 3 October, and is open to public participation by wine buyers and private bidders. Bidders must register by 25 September. A total of 55 wines will be auctioned, as well as a special 18 liter 2013 vintage crafted by Gottfried Mocke, now at Boekenhoutskloof and previously at Chamonix. The proceeds will benefit the Oenology and Viticulture Proteg\u00e9 Programmes of the Guild, to develop young potential winemakers and viticulturists. *. \u00a0The Veritas Young Wine Writers 2015 competition has opened, and is presented by the South African National Wine Show Association to ‘identify talented fresh voices to air their views about the wine industry’<\/em>. The competition aims to enhance the responsible enjoyment of wine in various dimensions, including food and wine pairing and travel. Entrants need to supply an 800-word article on the recent increased planting of Mediterranean and more unusual vine varieties in our country, and the future trends in this regard. A 300-word blogpost must be written about the most unusual red and white wine tasted in the past two years. Entrants must be 18-35 years old, and be South African. Closing date is 30 October. *. \u00a0Chef Pete Goffe-Wood recently said on his show on 2OV Radio<\/strong> that service standards in Fine Dining restaurants in our country do not meet international standards. It is more than about the food and ambiance when dining at such restaurants, usually being ‘ridiculously expensive’<\/em>. He mentioned The Greenhouse as a good example of Fine Dining, but that The Test Kitchen is not, having a relaxed atmosphere, with attention to detail missing, despite charging R1000 a head!<\/p>\n

*. \u00a0The Finalists of the Hartenberg Alchemy Best Home Cooked Burger competition have been announced, the winner being announced on 24 September: Braam Beyers, Marelize Grobbelaar, Jan Laubscher, Maggie Mostert\/Hennie Coetzee, Dennis Molewa, and Isabella Niehaus.
