\"Cape<\/a>The 31st Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild (CWG) Auction 2015 held at the Spier Conference Centre today achieved almost the same total as last year, at R11,8 million, despite 264 fewer cases having been sold today. Record prices for red and white wines were achieved, with an increase in the average price per case of 10%. The average price per case was R4599, or R767 per bottle. The 2015 revenue generated by the Auction was about R 100000 lower than that of 2014.<\/p>\n

The 55 wines sold at the Auction today were\u00a034 red wines, 17 white wines, 3 M\u00e9thode Cap Classique, and a dessert wine.\u00a0The highest price achieved at the Auction was for the Kanonkop CWG \"image\"<\/a>Paul Sauer 2012, achieving the highest price ever at a CWG Auction for a red wine, at R 12200 for a case of six bottles, an average of just over R2000 per bottle! Hartenberg CWG Auction Shiraz 2013 achieved a maximum price per case of R 11000, while Boekenhoutskloof Syrah Auction Reserve 2013 achieved R10000 as a maximum price per case. Etienne Le Riche Cabernet Sauvignon Auction Reserve 2013 achieved R 9600 per case.<\/p>\n

Adi Badenhorst’s AA Badenhorst Family Wines Graniet-Berg 2013 achieved a new Auction record for white wines, at R7000 per case of six, an average of R1167 per bottle. \u00a0Other top-selling white\"image\"<\/a> wines were\u00a0Ataraxia Under the Gavel Chardonnay 2014 at R6 400 per case, the AA Badenhorst Family Wines Geel-Kapel Muscat de Frontignan 2013 at R6 000, and Jordan Chardonnay Auction Selection 2014 at R5 800. \u00a0Mullineux The Gris Semillon 2014 achieved R5600 per case, and its Trifecta Chenin Blanc 2013 R5200.<\/p>\n

\"CWG<\/a>About 20% of the sales were made by Tsogo Sun (left), with other prominent buyers being The Butcher Shop and Grill, Restaurant Mosaic at The Orient, Rouseu\u00a0Wines of Belgium, and Singita, in addition to private collectors. \u00a0The vast majority of buyer was local, and\u00a016% bought by foreigners from Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Andries Burger of Paul Cluver Wines and Chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild, said about today’s Auction: ‘The auction results this year are testament to not only the quality of South African wines but also to the progress our wine industry has made. The perceived value of our auction wines as borne out in the high prices achieved again this year are a further endorsement of the excellent reviews the industry received after Cape Wine 2015′.<\/em> He said that R1,6 million was raised at the Auction today to go to the Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust and its Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Programme.<\/p>\n

An additional R231 500 was raised for the Cape Winemaker\u2019s Guild Prot\u00e9g\u00e9 Programme, a mentorship initiative for young upcoming winemakers and viticulturists. A special item sold at the Charity Auction, an 18-litre 2013 Members\u2019 Reserve comprising of a blend of top wines from all 46 members of the Guild, was sold for R40 000.<\/p>\n
