What a lovely space, with an earthy underground cellar feel. I was excited to hear that French Bistro Bouchon will open at Dorrance Cellar next month.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I had mistakenly thought that Dorrance\u00a0C<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image44.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-73204\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image44-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image44.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image44.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image44.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>ellar was an importer of French wines, so it was a surprise when new colleague James Boreland of Dorrance\u00a0Cellar explained that they make their own wines from local grapes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Cuv\u00e9e Ameena Syrah, a blend of grapes from Perdeberg and Elgin, and named after owner Christophe Durand&#8217;s daughter Ameena.<\/li>\n<li>Cuv\u00e9e Ana\u00efs Chardonnay, made from grapes from Franschhoek and Elgin.<\/li>\n<li>Kama Chenin Blanc, made from 39-year bush vine in Perdeberg, and honors Christophe&#8217;s wife and business partner Sabrina.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>James explained that Christophe imports barrels and other requirements from France <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image45.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-73205\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image45-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image45.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image45.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image45.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>for local winemakers. Their space has three sections: the tasting room with opens onto the square linked to Signal Hill Winery and Bizerca Bistro; an in-between space in which they can place a long table for 20 guests for events; and the new Bouchon Bistro, for which a kitchen is being established. \u00a0The co-owner (with Durand) of the Bistro is Faisal Khakoo from La Boheme and La Bruixa, and he introduced me to Chef<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image46.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-73206\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image46-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image46.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image46.jpg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image46.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a> Morn\u00e9 Steenkamp, who has moved to Cape Town from Mozambique. The menu will have small tapas-style dishes, and will open from 15h00 on weekdays initially. It will be similar to the now-defunct Caveau, where Faisal once worked many moons ago, before he opened his own restaurants in Sea Point.<\/p>\n<p>My first tasting stop was at the tasting table of Vondeling Wines, and Jane Ferreira poured a glass of her <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image47.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-73209\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image47-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image47.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image47.jpg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image47.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>family&#8217;s Klein Optenhorst MCC, which has just won second best\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/cape-town\/rose-rocks-2015-top10-winners-announced-fantastic-future-for-rose\/\">MCC Ros\u00e9 in the Ros\u00e9 Rocks competition.<\/a><\/strong><\/span> I also tried the Vondeling Erica 2012, named after a rare Paardeberg fynbos plant, a blend of Shiraz, Mourv\u00e8dre, Grenache, and Viognier. Other wines that were available for tasting were their Chenin Blanc 2015, Merlot 2015, Ros\u00e9 2015, Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Chardonnay 2014, Babiana 2013, Baldrick Shiraz 2013, Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Sweet Carolyn 2013, and the Erica.<br \/>\nChris Rawbone-Viljoen\u00a0of Oak Valley Wines told me that he is the 5th generation family member linked to the surname. I tasted their Pinot Noir 2013, the first vines having\u00a0been planted in <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image50.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-73214\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image50-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image50.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image50.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image50.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>1985, and the first grapes were sold to Bouchard Finlayson. Oak Valley has made the Pinot Noir since 2005. Other Oak Valley Wines are Stone &amp; Steel Riesling 2015, Fountain of Youth Sauvignon Blanc 2015, S\u00e9millon 2014, Mountain Reserve 2011, and Shiraz 2014. He was doing tastings of The Highroller Sauvignon Blanc 2014, The Underdog Chenin Blanc 2014, Blanc 2014, Prodigium Pinot Noir 2013, Cuvee Terra Lux Pinot Noir 2013, Swartland NOIR 2012, and Cultellus Syrah 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The Keermont table was manned by <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image55.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-73224\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image55-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image55.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image55.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/image55.jpg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>winemaker of ten years Alex Starey, friendly in taking me through a tasting of three of their red wines: Syrah 2012, Keermont Companion Merlot 2012, and Keermont 2012. They also offered Terasse 2014, Sweetwater Ros\u00e9 2014, and Fleurfontein 2012.
