One steps through an entrance way into a walkway past Dudley&#8217;s Larder, a Deli which belongs to the Karoux owners, and onto the stoep of Karoux, with a view onto a garden area with a fountain and croaking frogs. &nbsp;The menu is handwritten on a blackboard.<\/p>\n<p>Karoux writes on its website that &#8216;<em>Food should be simple in creation and complex in consumption<\/em>&#8216;. It welcomes patrons to the restaurant &#8216;<em>to spend time at their table<\/em>&#8216;, to experience their Karoo hospitality!<\/p>\n<p>Michael and Freddie had already arrived at Karoux, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image41.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-76892\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image41-225x300.jpeg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image41.jpeg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image41.jpeg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image41.jpeg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>enjoyed some Arendsig wine from the Robertson valley, which they have grown to enjoy. The partners previously lived in Cape Town, and moved to the countryside when they fell in love with the village, buying one house, and then a second, turning one of them into the <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wahnfried.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-76915\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wahnfried-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"Wahnfried\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wahnfried.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wahnfried.jpg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Wahnfried.jpg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Wahnfried cultural centre for live concert performances and for art movies, a legacy they will leave to the village. On the Sunday afternoon of my visit Michael was screening Mozart&#8217;s &#8216;<em>Zauberfl\u00f6te&#8217;<\/em>, in commemoration of Mozart&#8217;s 260th anniversary, so it was a double bonus in visiting the village, as was the invitation to stay over at Michael and Freddie&#8217;s home. Well-known UK Chef John Tovey, formerly of Miller Howe and now a McGregorian, also lunched at Karoux, and Michael told me that he was the first to offer De Wetshof wines in his UK restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image44.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-76895\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image44-225x300.jpeg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image44.jpeg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image44.jpeg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image44.jpeg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Karoux was bought from the previous owners three years ago, who had given the name to the restaurant. New owners Aimee and&nbsp;Ryan Josten run the restaurant by themselves, and decided&nbsp;to keep the name. The Deli is new, and named after their dog Dudley. Aimee was previously the Manager of Catharina&#8217;s at Steenberg while Ryan was the chef at Cellars Hohenhort. Chef Ryan studied at the Culinary Academy, and worked in Scotland, both at the Monachyle Mhor Hotel and <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image42.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-76893\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image42-150x150.jpeg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"image\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image42.jpeg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image42.jpeg?zoom=2&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image42.jpeg?zoom=3&amp;resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 450w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>Chef Albert Roux&#8217;s Chez Roux at Inver Lodge, before returning to Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p>Aimee brought generous slices of sourdough bread with a crispy crust and farm butter to the table. The tables have tablecloths and material napkins, with white bowls of salt and pepper.<\/p>\n<p>The menu changes daily. Other starter options are the signature twice-baked mature Gruyere cheese souffl\u00e9 with Tanagra grappa sauce (R70), and Karoux lamb kidneys wrapped in boar bacon with mustard vinaigrette (R65).<\/p>\n<p>Michael and I both ordered pan-roasted duck breast with <a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image46.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-76899\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image46-225x300.jpeg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image46.jpeg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image46.jpeg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/image46.jpeg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a>butternut, millet &#8216;risotto&#8217;, mange tout, carrots, and duck jus (a steal at R145), while Freddie had a delicious looking Tagliatelle in a creamy pesto sauce with lentil &#8216;<em>meatballs&#8217;<\/em> and Parmesan (R110).
