They fell in love with Cape Town eighteen months whilst on holiday, and returned a year ago to set up a wine tasting venue, having experienced the difficulty of buying and drinking wines as tourists. Marta told us that Raphael&#8217;s grandfather was a champagne winemaker, for the Charles Orban brand.<\/p>\n<p>This led Raphael (photograph above) and Marta (in the photograph with Seth, left) to decide to open a wine tasting venue. \u00a0They were lucky to know the previous owners of the space, who no longer wished to operate Isola,\u00a0and so they agreed to try out their concept with a one year lease.<\/p>\n<p>Raphael showed Seth and I around, including their kitchen leading from an outdoor courtyard, which they will also be able to use for seating in summer. On the street front they will also be able to seat patrons, currently seating 30 wine lovers indoors. \u00a0I loved the painted &#8216;flying carpet&#8217; painted outside the front door, to guide the patrons who have drunk too much wine to their homes!<\/p>\n<p>Raphael and Marta had bigger windows installed on the street <img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-81213\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-164-300x300.jpeg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-164.jpeg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-164.jpeg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-164.jpeg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-164.jpeg?resize=1024%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-164.jpeg?resize=600%2C600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-164.jpeg?w=1080&amp;ssl=1 1080w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><br \/>\nfrontage, painted the rooms a chic grey, found trendy furniture in Woodstock, built a bar counter in one of the front rooms, and created shelving for their wines in the Cellar and the Lounge. In the Cellar is a fun blackboard, which they call their winelist, the wall serving as a backdrop to the photograph I took of Raphael. Some of the wines displayed on the wall are Nu Cabernet Franc (R46 per glass, R139 per bottle), Creation Sauvignon Blanc 2016 (R52 per glass, R155 per bottle), Altydgedacht Gew\u00fcrztraminer 2014 (R49 per glass, R146 per bottle), and De Wetshof Finesse 2015 (R58 per glass, R173 per bottle).\u00a0Their pricing policy for their wines is to double the cellar door price.<\/p>\n<p>The feedback from wine estates is that they do not see OpenWine as a threat at all, and are happy to have a wine tasting facility at which they can be represented in the Cape Town city centre. In addition to wines, they are stocking gin, KWV Brandy, Dalla Cia grappa, and craft beers. This was followed by a Baby Marrow Parmigiana (R105).<\/p>\n<p>We were offered the Baccalao (cod) salad too, with potatoes, onion, and olives (R105), which was paired with Bilton Sir Percy Cape Blend 2009 (R220 per bottle). Another Bruschetta platter arrived, with Richard Bosman&#8217;s Salami el Vine (they sell it at the bar counter too, charging by centimeter), as well as French cheese maker Pepe Charlot&#8217;s Buchette and fynbos Tomme artisanal goats cheeses. Red wine bangers on red lentils (R125) was another lunch option for this week.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-81208\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.whalecottage.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-162-300x300.jpeg?resize=300%2C300\" alt=\"image\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-162.jpeg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-162.jpeg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-162.jpeg?resize=768%2C768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-162.jpeg?resize=600%2C600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.chrisvonulmenstein.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/image-162.jpeg?w=960&amp;ssl=1 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/>For each food course we were served, new cutlery and paper serviettes were brought to us.<\/p>\n<p>Friends from Italy assisted Raphael and Marta in the interior design, and also guided the staff in cooking Italian dishes.<\/p>\n<p>OpenWine is an &#8216;<em>enoteca<\/em>&#8216;, Raphael said, and wants it to be seen as a &#8216;<em>wine library<\/em>&#8216;, where patrons can learn more about wines. \u00a0They have an On-Consumption licence, and have applied for an Off-Consumption one, so that their customers can buy wines from them, to take home.<\/p>\n<p>Seth and I enjoyed sitting and chatting, eating, and drinking wine in the OpenWine Lounge, a staff member checking up on us regularly. Both Raphael and Marta shared information about their new business, and were generous in allowing us to try their dishes and wines, even though we had never met, and had not made an appointment to see them, planning to find out more about their business, and to eat there.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>OpenWine Taste Pair Shop<\/strong>, 72 Wale Street, Cape Town.
