After a meeting of the Commonwealth Games Federation in London yesterday, the following statement was issued: ‘The CGF has completed its review of the final information submitted by SA on November 30 2016, to determine whether their proposals for hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games are consistent with their original bid commitments and the host city contract. It is with disappointment that the detailed review has concluded that there is a significant departure from the undertakings provided in Durban’s bid and, as a result, a number of key obligations and commitments in areas such as governance, venues, funding and risk management/assurance have not been met under the revised proposition‘.

South African Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula is reported to have admitted two weeks ago that it was ‘facing an uphill battle to host the games amid the fight over funding’. A finger was pointed at the Federation, for wanting to extract more money from our government. Originally guarantees of R4 billion were agreed to, but the Federation is reported to have subsequently demanded double thus amount. Durban city did not make its first payment of £1,5 million, a local organizing committee was not set up, and a host city contract was not signed.

Potential city replacements for the 2022 Commonwealth Games are Liverpool, Sri Lanka, and Australia. The Commonwealth Games Federation said that it is committed to hosting a future Commonwealth Games in Africa.

The KwaZulu-Natal DA leader Zwakele Mncwango said that hosting the Commonwealth Games was never affordable, and that the R118 million spent on the bid to date was a waste. He is calling for a full-scale investigation into the monies wasted by the city of Durban in bidding for the Commonwealth Games.
