\"\"<\/a>A record 111 South African wines received a coveted 2018 Platter\u2019s Guide five-star rating at the Awards ceremony held at the Table Bay Hotel tonight. Raats Family Wines was named as the 2018 Winery of the Year.<\/p>\n

The 111 five-star wines received a score of 95 points or more, a record number of five-star wines, described by Platter\u2019s as \u2018South African Classics<\/i>\u2019. The final five-star winning wines were evaluated blind, whereas all other wines evaluated for the Platter\u2019s Guide were judged sighted.<\/p>\n

Red Wine of the Year was awarded to 2016 Winery of the Year, Nederburg Wines, for their Two Centuries Cabernet Sauvignon 2014. White Wine of the Year went to The Foundry for the Grenache Blanc 2015. Unfortified Dessert Wine of the Year was awarded to Klein Constantia Estate for Vin de Constance 2013; and the inaugural Fortified Dessert Wine of the Year went to Beaumont Family Wines for Starboard Dessert Wine NV.<\/p>\n

But the star of the Platter\u2019s Guide Award evening was Raats Family Wines. The Winery won five five-star ratings, three for its Chenin Blancs, beating all other five-star producers. Owner Bruwer Raats also was the winemaker of Mvemve Raats and B Vintners Vine Exploration Co, which won three five-star ratings.<\/p>\n

Platter\u2019s by Diners Club publisher Jean-Pierre Rossouw said about the 2018 Awards: \u2018As per last year, all wines that were scored 4.5 stars (90 points) or higher in the primary assessment went into a second round of tasting, conducted blind (without sight of the label) by small panels including experienced palates from outside the team. The high number of Five Stars is testament to ever-improving wine-making, aided in no small part by the exceptional quality of the highly regarded 2015 and 2017 vintages. Hearty congratulations to all winners!\u2019<\/i><\/p>\n

Rossouw urged the stellar Winemakers to \u2018hold your prices firm – we need our best wines to get better prices<\/i>\u2019. He also announced that Platter\u2019s has created bottle seals with each wine\u2019s score out of 100, an internationally recognized scoring system.<\/p>\n

The twenty wineries winning their first ever five-star ratings were B Vintners Vine Exploration Co; Cape Wine Company; Carinus Family Vineyards; Daschbosch (previously uniWines); Elemental Bob; Highlands Road Estate; JC Wickens Wines; Lanzerac Wine Estate; Le Sueur Wines; Lingen; Longridge Wine Estate; Orange River Cellars; Paserene; Pongr\u00e1cz; Remhoogte Wine Estate; Reverie; The Stellenbosch Reserve; Thistle & Weed; Van Loveren Family Vineyards; and Zorgvliet Wines.<\/p>\n

The wine tasters for the 2018 Guide were Angela Lloyd; Master of Wine Cathy van Zyl; Cape Wine Masters Winnie Bowman, Greg de Bruyn, Tim James, Christine Rudman and Meryl Weaver; Hennie Coetzee, Joanne Gibson, Cathy Marston, Fiona McDonald, Gregory Mutambe, Samarie Smith, and Dave Swingler, under the watchful eye of Philip van Zyl. <\/p>\n
