I know that the French restaurant Michelin stars are awarded around the beginning of February, and checked to see whether South African owned JAN restaurant in Nice had received its one-star again. It has, the accolades having been presented a week ago. Yesterday was the start date of the second TV series of ‘JAN’. So a well-deserved congratulations to owner Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen and his team in Nice.
JAN restaurant was first awarded a one-star by Michelin in 2016, seven months after I ate at the restaurant for the first time. Since then it has been awarded each year, making this the fifth year running that the accolade has been received. This year a total of 509 French restaurants received a one-star accolade, 85 restaurants were awarded two stars, and 28 were awarded three stars,
A background to the restaurant and our South African chef, the first of only two South African chefs heading up a Michelin star restaurant, follows below:
JAN Restaurant in Nice first SA-owned Michelin star restaurant, creates SA culinary history!
The evaluation of restaurants by Michelin inspectors has been the subject of a Blogpost which I wrote last year:
The Eat and Meat of a Michelin Restaurant Inspector! A star job, eating out 275 times a year?
I was surprised that I had not seen anything written on Social Media and his own publications by Chef Jan-Hendrik about the Michelin star this year, but the launch of the JAN TV series 2 may have overshadowed this important accolade. Details of JAN series 1 follow below:
I will be reporting on JAN TV series 2.
