The Sweet Service Award goes to Hartlief in the Garden’s Centre, whose staff took a telephonic order, and kept it for me despite arriving close to their closing time. The Manager Ben said that they knew that I would arrive, from the many years that I have supported the shop, and its predecessor Raith.
The Sour Service Award goes to the International Women’s Club, for declining my membership application, despite being nominated and seconded by two members, and meeting its membership criteria, especially in holding a foreign passport. The Membership Chair Julia Haldane refused to disclose reasons, writing rudely that ‘the decision of the Board regarding membership is final and we are not able to enter into further correspondence’. As I know only one Board member, and the other Board members not knowing me, one wonders on what basis such discriminatory decisions are made, when the aim of the Club ‘is to promote friendship among women of all nations and to give support to philanthropic projects’!
