Newest Restaurant openings and closures in Cape Town and the Winelands: August 2016!

imageJuly has seen the opening of new restaurants Burger & Lobster, Unframed Ice Cream, ASH, and more, despite it still being the middle of winter. Shock news is that long-established Kitima is closing next week (see Postscript). A number of other restaurants have closed.

Restaurants still opening in Cape Town & Winelands, despite end of season!

imageNew restaurant openings continue, especially in Cape Town.  The most amazing new opening success has been Locanda Restaurant at Villa 47 on Bree Street, which became the city’s favorite within its first week of opening!   Very interesting news is Chef Ivor Jones’ departure from The Test Kitchen* at the end of the month and his future (see below).

imageWhile top  chefs are staying in their posts to meet the Eat Out criteria for Top 20 consideration, the flood of new restaurant openings continues, especially in Cape Town. We update information about newly opened and closed restaurants continuously.

#    Benguela on Main has opened in Somerset West, with Chef Jean Delport (photograph)

#   Chef Luke Dale-Roberts has opened Naturalis, as an ‘incubation hub’, for lunches, and a venue for occasional dinners and events.

#   The Harbour House Group is planning to open two new restaurants on the Muizenberg beachfront: a 160-seater Live Bait, and Howlin’ Wolf, a burger and beer quick service restaurant

Restaurant Review: Jan Restaurant haven of style, superb cuisine, and SA hospitality in Nice!

imageLast Friday my life changed, when I had the pleasure of meeting the nicest possible Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen in the world, and eating at his Nice-based Jan Restaurant, which opened almost two years ago. To my knowledge it is the imageonly South African chef-owned restaurant listed in a Michelin Guide!

I first heard about Chef Jan from the Facebook page of Errieda du Toit, and was granted a Friend request!  I loved his photographs, and the Michelin Guide listing achievement for one of our locals made me determined to visit Continue reading →
