* The Western Cape government has committed R 2,4 million to ‘preserving the Western Cape’s culture and heritage and therefore is committed to providing continued support for them’, MEC Nomafrench Mbombo has said, supporting the Cape Minstrels and Malay and Christmas choirs, and their Christmas Choir Bands March on 24 December, The Nagtroupe March on New Years Eve, and the Tweede Nuwejaar Minstrel March. The community will organise its own Cape Annual Minstrel Carnival next year, after the City of Cape Town’s interference in the past led to problems and poor publicity for the City.
* Australia has been using its unique food and wine bounty to market tourism via the ‘Restaurant Australia‘ campaign to the country. Last week it hosted some of the most important food and wine VIPs to its ‘Invite the World to Dinner‘ event in Hobart. Different creative dishes were served in different artistic venues. The organisers claim to have reached 400 million viewers through the event.

* Du Toitskloof and Standard Bank are calling for entries for their second Wine Writer of the Year competition, this year linking to Cape Town hosting World Design Capital 2014. The writing topic for this year is ‘The role and/or history of design in contributing to the uniqueness of the South African wine industry‘, and the entry should not previously have been published. Entries close on 26 September.
* Evelyn Mahlaba has been appointed by SA Tourism as its Director for Africa, responsible for enhancing tourism to our country from East, West, and Central Africa, working with its travel trade in particular.
* Amarula Cream is celebrating its 25th birthday over three months, from October onwards, offering gifts and prizes in competitions. When buying two bottles, one receives R50 back in cash via an ABSA ATM. Independent retailers are offering prizes. * The City of Cape Town has developed a new parking policy based on transport trends in Cape Town, including increasing numbers of delivery vehicles, and traffic congestion in peak times. The City plans to discourage parking of 2 hours and longer, by encouraging parking outside the city centre and then to use a different form of transport (the MyCiTi Bus no doubt) to reach the city centre. Demand-based pricing is to be introduced, the bays in higher demand areas having higher charges, and higher demand times of the day attracting higher charges. Smartcard payment is being considered yet again. The cost of the first phase of the parking policy is R15 million.
* SA Tourism is running a massive #MeetSouthAfrica blogger campaign at the moment, 14 local and international bloggers having arrived in Johannesburg last Friday, and heading in different directions in groups, to discover various parts of our country, until they meet up again in Durban at Indaba this coming weekend.
* The Palm Beach Daily News has chosen Glenelly Lady May 2009, a Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot blend, as one of its ten top picks for the coming American summer season. It is the only South African wine selected.
