Cape Times Sweet Service and Massimo’s Plumstead Sour Service Awards

The Sweet Service Award goes to the Cape Times, for its wonderful new service of creating a movie listing for all Ster Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas in the Western Cape for the week ahead.  Previously these cinema chains ran (separate) daily ads in the entertainment pages of the two local Cape Town newspapers, but Ster Kinekor stopped advertising last year, and Nu Metro stopped its advertising last month, encouraging one to set up their website on one’s phone.  Not all avid movie-goers are so tech-savvy to do so, and therefore the Cape Times movie information listing is most welcome!

The Sour Service Award goes to Massimo’s in Plumstead, and is nominated by Massimo Orione, owner of Massimo’s Pizza Club in Hout Bay.  Massimo from Hout Bay wrote to complain that Massimo’s Plumstead ‘stole my name but also the logo from Pizza Express’, a UK pizza chain.  Matters came to a head when Massimo’s Plumstead ran a Groupon special, which damaged the image and reputation of Massimo’s Pizzaclub.

Nu Metro Sweet Service and Mill Coffee House Sour Service Awards

The Sweet Service Award goes to the Nu Metro cinema in the V&A Waterfront, whose manager on duty (the first time I have ever seen one) allowed me to change a ticket for an alternative movie, when I realised that I had already seen the one that I had booked.  There were no questions asked, and I was shown which seat I could sit in for the alternative movie I chose.  The lady selling the movie ticket was friendly and efficient, a rarity at this movie house.  She also told me which would be the best price option for the ticket.

The Sour Service Award goes to Mill Coffee House in Stellenbosch, and is nominated by Tanja Kruger: “Just thought I should let you know about my shocking experience at Mill House. Went there last week (in September) for a quick breakfast with my mom. I knew the owner had a bad day, because he was talking so loudly to the guest on the table next to us about cars being broken into…..I presume at the guest house area. We ordered coffees and some breakfast. Coffee was fine and waitress was friendly enough, but when the food came…..I was too disgusted to eat anything off the plates……they looked like they weren’t washed, just wiped by a dirty cloth (and I’m not talking about the greasy rims of the plates…..I’m talking about the inside where the food was on) there were even still some old pieces of food stuck to the top and bottom of the plates. The scary part is also that it was not only my plate, but both the plates. We showed the (now uninterested) waitress, who took it back to the kitchen. The barista came to apologize and offered us some coffees on the house to make up. Our second plates came out (cleaner than before, but still visibly greasy) carried by one of the kitchen staff..!?!?! She plonked the plates down on the table and asked if we were the people that complained and what the problem was because she saw no problem and asked sarcastically if this was good enough for us now. So I left the breakfast furious and got up to pay for the coffees…they handed me a bill with everything on it…the breakfasts and the comp coffees. I refused to pay, just paid for the  coffees. He asked if we want to speak to the owner..I said I wouldn’t bother. After we left, the owner ran after us with a plate of food, into the street!!!! He said we have a problem because there is nothing wrong with the food. We walked away, while he screamed after us in the street. It was the worst restaurant experience, and I have never experienced such rudeness in my life!!! No wonder the place is always empty! What happened to the customer is always right!?”

Greek Fisherman Sweet and V&A Waterfront Sour Service Awards

The Sweet Service Award goes to the Greek Fisherman restaurant in the V & A Waterfront, which generously hosted members of the Camps Bay Accommodation association, as well as other guest house owners, for a dinner earlier this week.   Partnering with Asara wine estate, who sponsored the wines, the restaurant kept a steady flow of Greek specialities such as souvlaki, calamari, mussels, spinach and ricotta ravioli, haloumi cheese, and prawns coming to the tables.   Efaristo!

The Sour Service Award goes to the V & A Waterfront, for its lack of customer care.  As if its lack of concern about the regular feedback in newspapers about its high parking fees, and the resultant public declarations from locals that they will not return to the shopping centre, is not enough, it now has a new way to ensure that Capetonians will stay away from the Waterfront for the next month.  An upgrade of its airconditioning, which commenced last week without warning to customers and tenants, is scheduled to last until 16 November.   During this period an operational level of 20 % airconditioning has been promised.   On Sunday evening a customer picked up the incredible heat in the passage near Melissa’s, as if one had entered an oven, and was told by the Melissa’s staff that the airconditioner was broken.  Thereafter the customer bought a movie ticket for the 3,5 hour long ‘Last Night of the Proms’ at the Cinema Nouveau, and was not told by the staff that the airconditioning was not working there too.  The staff referred the cinema-goer to the notice from the Waterfront’s retail management company Lexshell 44 General Trading (Pty) Ltd., which was stuck on each movie house door.   The Manager at Cinema Nouveau, Liziwe Maningjwa,  was not interested in discussing the matter with the cinema-goer, and in fact told the customer to go to the media, as she was not interested in sorting out the problem.   A visit to Belthazar on Wednesday evening was unbearable, in terms of the extreme heat inside the restaurant, despite all efforts by the restaurant to open all its doors to cool things down.  The restaurant’s biggest concern is keeping its customers, but also importantly its large and expensive stock of wines, cool.  A call from the V & A Marketing department expressed surprise that the customer’s message should go to the media, and communicated that a media campaign is to be launched, to explain to customers that there is a problem with the airconditioning, and that the retail center will set up 25 temporary airconditioners for the next month.   These units have yet to be installed!   The aircon problem affects the whole of the “old” section of the shopping centre – i.e. the wing that was developed originally.  This includes the Red Shed, the food court, both the Nu Metro and Cinema Nouveau movie houses, the offices, restaurants such as Belthezar, Cape Town Fish Market, Krugman’s Grill, Haagen-Dasz, San Marco, Sevruga, Santa Ana Spur, Wang Thai, 221 Waterfront, and Ocean Basket, the Post Office, and all the shops in this wing.   Not only is the V & A Waterfront ripping customers off in terms of parking fees (it cost R 30 for the parking fee to see the movie), but now one can also endure a free unwanted sauna in the V & A Waterfront!

Allee Bleue Sweet and V&A Waterfront Sour Service Award

The Sweet Service Award goes to Desmond Spangenberg at Allee Bleue, a wine estate outside Franschhoek.   The estate has undergone a transformation in keeping its boom open and being welcoming to visitors, after years of keeping it closed and questioning visitors as to what they want!    The restaurant on the estate serves lunches and breakfasts at the most reasonable prices, and the menu contains out of the ordinary dishes.   The latest and most welcome addition to the service range is a free wireless ADSL service, which unfortunately is not made known to the patrons of the restaurant.

The Sour Service Award goes to the V & A Waterfront for their parking machines being out of order in the basement section underneath the Nu Metro cinema.  A first machine did not accept any notes, and the next one accepted a note, but then jammed and would not release the ticket after payment.   It took 10 minutes of ringing the service bell for someone to respond – he sits next to the parking machines, but is not immediately visible to customers.  Once the problem was explained to him, he said the customer should drive out, and press the button at the boom – it took 20 minutes for him to respond and open the boom!
