Women’s Day celebrates women’s rights, but demands more!

Women’s Day has been celebrated in South Africa on 9 August since 1995, and is an official public holiday.

The day commemorates the 20000 women who marched on the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, to protest the extension of Pass Laws to women, which controlled women even further and reduced them to passive beings, at the mercy of men.

This year the theme of Women’s Day is ‘Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights for an Equal Future’. The day draws attention to the issues African women face, such as parenting, domestic violence, unequal pay, and schooling.

The celebration of women on one day only has grown to all of August being celebrated as Women’s Month.

As the rights of women have grown, many local women have climbed up corporate, political, academic, and Government ladders. These are some of them:

#. Helen Zille:  Former Mayor of Cape Town and Premier of the Western Cape.

#. Professor Thuli Madonsela: former Public Protector, and current Law Trust Chair for Social Justice Research at the University of Stellenbosch

#. Nicky Newton-King, the first woman to run the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

#. Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town.

#. Dr Elmi Muller, organ transplant pioneer

#.  Dr Mosadi Mahoko, award-winning plastic surgeon specialising in cleft lip and palate reconstruction surgery.

#  Dr Glenda Gray, CEO and President of the SA Medical Research Council.

#  Ministers Angela Thokozile Didiza, Maisie Angelina Motshekga, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Thandi Ruth Modise, Barbara Dallas Creecy, Mmamoloko Kubayi, Dr Naledi Pandor, Maite Emily Nkoana-Mashabane, Patricia de Lille, Lindiwe Sisulu, in the SA Government.

Women are still not receiving equal pay in many professions and jobs, and it is time that this gender discrimination be put an end to.  They also do not receive equal opportunities in employment, and career advancement.

New Cypriot Ouzeri restaurant highlights talents of Owner/Chef Nick Charalambous and team!

I spontaneously dropped in at the new Cypriot Ouzeri restaurant on Wale Street last night, and learnt about Cypriot food, about its owner Chef Nick Charalambous, and tasted dishes from Greece and Cyprus I’d never heard of before.

Arriving at 18h00, with no one else present, the hostess at the door told me that they are fully booked, and was happy to send me on my way. I told her that I wasn’t planning to spend the whole evening there, and did she have a short gap for me. The Restaurant Manager was kind, looked at her Reservations schedule, and found a table that gave me a one hour eating time, which was perfect. Continue reading →

House of Hier wines launches with two cultivars hier and now!

On Sunday evening I was one of the invited guests who were introduced to the new House of Hier wines by its owner Jaco Pienaar, in the home of Tania Olivier, whose White0000 company crafted the unusual name of the wine brand, and designed its unusual labels.

Jaco explained that Hier in the name denotes the location and terroir of his wines, being on the Breede River, between Bonnievale and Robertson, in one of the most southerly vineyards of the Robertson Valley, facing the sea breeze.

Hier is a collaboration between Jaco and Arendsig owner and winemaker Lourens van der Westhuizen.

‘Fancy Finnish Food’ a fabulous Finnish Food Feast in Constantia!

As a food writer, I do strike it lucky once in a while. One of the highlights of this year’s invitations was that from the Finnish Embassy to attend their ‘Fancy Finnish Food’ Dinner held at the home of the Finnish Honorary Consul Philip Palmgren. The aim of the event was to communicate to South Africans what Finnish cuisine and spirits are all about.

My friend Gary Peterson joined me for this exciting event, which was attended by 26 guests seated at one long table.  We knew no one else, but I did know of Chef Dion Vengatass, a former Chef at the Mount Nelson Hotel.  Continue reading →
