Haskell Vineyards celebrates 10th anniversary!

Haskell bottles Whale Cottage PorfolioDespite having made wine for ten years at Haskell Vineyards, previously named Dombeya Wines, no more than four vintages of Haskell wines have been made to date.  Yesterday we were invited to attend  a tasting of the complete range of Haskell wines at the home of American London-based owner Preston Haskell in Fresnaye.

Even though it was the coldest day this winter, the inside of the large house was warm and a fireplace added to a cosy feeling.  The Haskell house is right at the top of Fresnaye, with a beautiful view. Haskell said he fell in love with Cape Town and the winelands ten years ago, first buying his house and then investing in the Dombeya vineyard.  Rianie Strydom is a highly respected winemaker, and Haskell and his business associate Grant Dodd are very proud of her.

Haskell is very well connected and used to host Cape Town’s most famous New Year’s Eve party in Fresnaye, until he realised one year that he didn’t know most of the guest attending, and that was the last such party he hosted!  I remembered driving some guests from our Whale CottageHaskell Preston Haskell Whale Cottage Portfolio Camps Bay to his house for one such party about eight years ago, and our guests were very excited about Prince Albert attending with his new swimmer girlfriend none of us had heard of, now his wife Princess Charlène.  Haskell saw the couple about a month ago, and heard the good news then already, to explain why Princess Charlène was avoiding the limelight, as she did not want to be seen to not be drinking wine, as this would confirm her pregnancy.  Haskell provided a large quantity of Dombeya wine for the royal wedding three years ago, which he attended, and it has been used for other events too.  Haskell flew in from London directly to the event yesterday morning, and heads for Namibia later this week.  Grant is the Managing Partner of Haskell Vineyards, visiting regularly from the Hunter Valley in Australia, where he is based. The Square at Vineyard Hotel celebrates Royal Wedding with ‘Best of British’ menu

April is Royal Wedding month, and the forthcoming marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton has inspired The Square Restaurant at the Vineyard Hotel & Spa in Newlands to offer a ‘Best of British’ menu, changing every week, in the run up to the wedding on 29 April.

Currently The Square serves Welsh Rarebit, Fish Pie and Spotted Dick.  The menu changes on 11 April, and Slow Roasted Pork Belly, Braised Lamb Shank and Treacle Tart will be served.   From 18 – 24 April the ‘Best of British’ menu includes Bubble and Squeak, Beef Wellington and Poached Salmon Trout.  From 25 – 30 April The Square will serve Warm Scotch Eggs, Beer Battered Hake, and Steak, Kidney and Guinness Pudding.   The ‘Best of British’ costs R 140 for two courses and R 170 for three courses.

Alex Jenkinson is the new sous chef at The Vineyard Hotel & Spa, and he is driving the new ‘Tastes of 2011′ theme at The Square.  “Each month we will feature a different themed menu.  We devised a British menu for each week in April, building up to the royal nuptials towards the end of the month. Being half British and half South African, I really enjoyed developing the four different menus and hope this comes across in our guests’ dining experience”.  The Vineyard Hotel & Spa GM Roy Davies added: “It’s no secret that winter months are slow months in the hospitality industry.  As such, many restaurants offer ‘winter warmer’ specials, and do so with great success.  But it’s necessary to be a step ahead of the competition, so we’ve tried to be a little more creative and relevant with ‘Tastes of 2011′”.

The Vineyard Hotel & Spa is planning to run a series of themes in The Square restaurant in the next six months, including 19th century menus in August, South African menus in September, Feel Good Food menus in May, and Classical Food menus in July.
