Many tourists have heard of Mzoli’s in Gugulethu, a butchery which barbecues one’s meat, and then one eats it in a dining section, usually accompanied by township music, especially on Saturdays, when it is said to become very festive. On Friday I experienced Mzoli’s as well as Nomzamo Butchery in Langa, offering a similar service. * The latest quarterly survey by the Bureau of Economic Research shows a sharp drop in confidence in the Accommodation sector, with an index of 36 in the first Quarter of this year, to a projected index of 22 in this quarter, and down to zero in Quarter 3. Rates are seen to be reduced in Quarter 3, and Business Confidence has dropped from 76% in Quarter 1 to 56% in this quarter! (received via e-mail from the Bureau of Economic Research)
* Huffington Post praises Cape Town, and lists ‘Top 10 Things to do in Cape Town, South Africa‘, but in reality it lists far more than ten things: visiting Cape Point; the penguins at Boulders Beach; the Winelands, including Le Petite Ferme, Môreson, Haute Cabrière, Delaire Graff, La Residence, The Franschhoek Wine Tram, Tokara, Kanonkop, and Groot Constantia; Umi restaurant and the Marly hotel in Camps Bay; Robben Island; Table Mountain; a township tour; eat at The Test Kitchen, Pot Luck Club, ‘Bistro’ (sic) Bizerca ‘Signal‘ (sic), Charly’s Bakery, and The Tasting Room; the V&A Market on the Wharf; shopping at Merchants on Long and Chandler House; and High Tea at Belmond Mount Nelson.

* Forbes has published a wonderful article by Fathom travel website about Cape Town and the Winelands, describing it as a ‘mix of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Napa Valley – with a little Bilbao thrown in‘. It recommends Table Mountain, penguins at ‘Boulder Bay’ (sic) ‘Beach‘, ‘design-centric’ shopping at Cape Quarter, Lion’s Head, Robben Island, ‘Victoria and Albert (sic) Waterfront‘, a township tour, Simonstown, Surf Shack in Muizenberg, Delaire Graff Restaurant, and Babylonstoren. For shopping O.live, Nap, Merchants on Long, Monkey Biz, and African Nova are recommended. Restaurant recommendations include Harbour House, Live Bait, Grand Café on the Beach, Bungalow, Bistro Sixteen82, The Greenhouse, The Test Kitchen, and The Round House.
* Henco J (his surname is not revealed) from Pretoria is one of three winners of the Jameson First Shot awards, an annual opportunity to have a short film produced given to a resident of South Africa, Russia, and the USA by Oscar winning actor Kevin Spacey. The three winners will have their film produced in Los Angeles later this year, with actress Uma Thurman in the lead role in each. Henco’s script is called ‘The Mundane Goddess’, and tells the story of Hera, the queen of Greek gods.

Cape Town has its day!
Cape Town was honoured with a special Cape Town’s Day on 27 September, co-inciding with World Tourism Day.
Cape Town Tourism created the special day, which was designed to give something back to Capetonians, by allowing them to enjoy the icons and attractions of Cape Town. Local radio stations ran competitions, and winners received free tickets to go up Table Mountain, to visit Robben Island, Kirstenbosch, World of Birds, MTN Science Centre, Monkey Town, the Aquarium, and to enjoy a township tour, a city sightseeing bus tour or the Southern Line Rail Route.
