I was recently asked if I would be leaving the country on Day Zero, projected to be 16 April currently, something that had never crossed my mind! It appears that a large number of locals are making plans to leave Cape Town, and reside elsewhere in our country or internationally, where they will have access to water! Water Day Zero brought forward by nine days, to 12 April 2018!
For the first time Cape Town Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson has issued a statement about the City of Cape Town’s dire water shortage situation, after taking over the responsibility for the water situation for the city, as well as its communication. Current Mayor Patricia de Lille has been suspended from all water-related issues and its communication! Sadly the Deputy Mayor has announced that water-saving measures are not meeting targets, and therefore Day Zero has been brought forward by nine days to 12 April, from 21 April previously! Cape Town water supply remains critical, moves to Level 4B water restrictions, despite winter rain!
On Saturday 1 July the City of Cape Town moved its water restrictions up one notch, to Level 4B, reducing the average daily consumption to 87 liters per person, from 100 liters per day previously. Premier Zille announces Western Cape a water disaster area: too little too late?
Today Premier Helen Zille announced that the Western Cape has been declared a disaster area, given our province’s worst drought since 1904. Given that the dams supplying Cape Town collectively only have about 20% water left, one wonders what took her so long to make this declaration! The declaration is yet to be gazetted!
