Brunch at Ideas Cartel on Loop Street serves breakfast all day!

On Saturday I visited another restaurant in the Ideas Cartel Group, being Brunch Café in Ideas Cartel House on 113 Loop Street.

Brunch Café serves Breakfast all day, and little else, other than a cake of a day and a variety of beverages.

Ideas Cartel is a group offering coworking spaces in interesting buildings around the city and Winelands, and is described as ‘where great ideas come to life’.  It opened its first workspace above Hemelhuijs in 2013, then on Loop Street in 2014, at The Old Foundry in 2018, at Casa Labia in Muizenberg in 2020, the Ambassade in Stellenbosch in 2021, and Misfits earlier this year. They are currently working on a new space in Claremont.

I found it hard to find the building in Loop Street from Wale Street, set back a little on the right hand side.  Brunch is in the Ground Floor, with the reception to the six-bedroom Cartel House Hotel on the third floor. Coworking spaces are available on the 7th and 8th floors, a school operates on the 5th floor, the Labour Court is on the 2nd floor, a company operates on the 4th floor, the hotel has a social lounge in the 10th floor, and the 11th floor has an outside entertainment area and pool.

I met Karen Moyle at Brunch Café at lunch time, and we decided to try the unusual (to me) Dutch Babies Breakfast, unusual in being served in a pan, with a pancake base, eggs of one’s choice (poached for me), roasted tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, sausages and bacon. I ordered tea with the breakfast, happy to find Dilmah Earl Grey tea there. We finished off our lunch with a slice of delicious moist carrot cake each.

Other Breakfast dishes available include Eggs Benedict; Smashed avocado and feta and seeds on toast  (R95) ; Full English Breakfast (R145) ; Millionaire’s Breakfast with truffle scramble, challah, and smoked salmon (R135); Croque Madame (R145); Health muffin (R55); Three-egg omelet (R45); Grilled cheese or chicken mayo sandwiches (R70 – R90); Gourmet beef burger with side salad (R130); chicken wrap and side salad or fries (R135); and BLT (R95). Smoothies and Bowls are available too.

Karen told me that they offer a pay-and-weigh harvest table with a variety of salads on weekdays, popular with persons working in the city centre area. On weekends they offer buy one get one free Mimosas. A Soup & Sarmie Lunch Special is available daily at R65.

The Brunch Café is on two levels, and tables can be used for workshops and coworking space, or to relax and have a drink and a bite to eat.

Brunch Café is pet-friendly.
