While many South Africans thought that they could call food delivery companies to order meals from their favorite restaurants, their hopes have been dashed by clarification received from the Government that no drivers of food from restaurants and bars are permitted to be on the roads during the Corona Virus Lockdown, which commences at midnight on Thursday 26 March.
Companies such as Mr D Food and Uber Eats will no longer be able to deliver food from favourite restaurants. This implies that no restaurants may remain open during the Lockdown, this being the impression created initially after hearing President Ramaphosa’s Lockdown speech on Monday evening.
The Department of Tourism clarified that restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and cafés do not constitute ‘essential services’ permitted to continue running their businesses during the COVID-19 Lockdown, and therefore have to close as of 27 March.
Many restaurants had hoped that they would be able to continue to run their businesses via Take-Away delivery during Lockdown, but their hopes have been dashed.
