Divas Unite Sweet Service and BIC Sour Service Awards!

Diva Unite performerThe Sweet Service Award goes to Divas Unite, for the event held in the City Hall to celebrate Women’s Day and to raise funds for a women’s breast cancer detection and treatment service. Organized by the ever-energetic Barbara Lenhard of Opulent Living, the event showcased some of our country’s most talented women performers, including Zanne Stapelberg, Judy Page, Kim Kallie, and Zolani Mahola from Freshlyground, accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, largely made up of women musicians.

BICThe Sour Service Award goes to BIC and its advertising agency, for its sexist advertisement aimed at women on Women’s Day, and its subsequent grovelling apology on Facebook: ‘Hi everyone. Let’s start out by saying we’re incredibly sorry for offending everybody – that was never our intention, but we completely understand where we’ve gone wrong. This post should never have gone out. The feedback you have given us will help us ensure that something like this will never happen again, and we appreciate that’.  The story went viral, and was even picked up on international news networks such as CNN, publicity our country does not need!

The WhaleTales Sweet & Sour Service Awards are presented every Friday on the WhaleTales blog.  Nominations for the Sweet and Sour Service Awards can be sent to Chris von Ulmenstein at whalecot@iafrica.com.   Past winners of the Sweet and Sour Service Awards can be read on the Friday posts of this blog.
