Everest window cleaners Sweet Service and Woolworths Sour Service Awards!

Everest window cleaningThe Sweet Service Award goes to Everest window cleaners, for their speedy service.  We had been disappointed with our two previous suppliers, so I called Everest’s office number seen on a vehicle which I was driving behind in Camps Bay.  Co-owner Gordon came within 15 minutes to do a quotation, and made an appointment to clean the windows three working days later, an unusual speedy service!  Disappointing was that they arrived half an hour late, without notification.  However, the job was done in half a hour, with a few extra windows done too, and the charge was very reasonable,
Woolworths orange juiceThe Sour Service Award goes to Woolworths for its deliberate attempt to mislead it shoppers with its orange juice, looking just like freshly squeezed orange juice they stock, and denoted as ‘Orange 100% juice’.  The wording is misleading as it is not pure orange juice, but ‘reconstituted orange concentrate (contains orange cells. flavouring)‘!

The WhaleTales Sweet & Sour Service Awards are presented every Friday on the WhaleTales blog.  Nominations for the Sweet and Sour Service Awards can be sent to Chris von Ulmenstein at  whalecot@iafrica.com.   Past winners of the Sweet and Sour Service Awards can be read on the Friday posts of this blog.

  1. Still bashing Woolworths. They supply the freshest and best quality in fruit and veg SA. All bottled juice I know of is not fresh squeezed, but woollies is the best.

    • Dear Breeze Inn Guesthouse

Not a nice introduction to your comment.

Woolworths certainly isn’t perfect, especially not when the retailer tries to mislead its customers in a devious and dishonest manner on its labels!

Woolworths has received a number of Sweet Awards on this Blog too!

      • I am not sure of the misleading Chris, as the label is similar to most other juices available. We have had this conversation about Woolworths before. We are 30 kilometers from shops and buy most of our groceries at Spar, as we find them better than Pick and Pay. We have to go another 15 kilometers to Woolworths and do that every third or fourth trip. We find their products far superior in terms of how long they keep and other than meat, which is very expensive, find them of better value, as you use it all and don’t throw away rotting veg, etc. This is after 15 years of running a B&B and is a personal point of view. I would love to do all of my shopping at the shop with the best quality but it costs us more to get there.

        • There is nothing honest about the order of the words on the label: ‘orange 100% juice’ – one cannot help think, as I did, that this is 100% orange juice, but of course it is not!

    • Woolworths is the best at LYING to their customers, stocking GMO-infested “food”, BREAKING PROMISES to stock non-tortured pork by the end of last year, using MISLEADING bullshit dairy labels (which they were forced to change thanks to the intervention of consumers like the Grass Consumer Action group), saying their chickens are free-range when they barely get an hour of sunlight and the list goes on and on. I can gladly supply images and links if necessary. Breeze In Guesthouse, how about you catch a wake-up???

      • Thank you for listing some of Woolworths’ marketing and product sins Caroline.

      • Caroline I think you need to look closer at the food chain. There is seriously bad food out there but I will trust Woolworths before any other chain. Our quality meals have made us a sucessful B&B over the last 15 years. We have done serious homework about where food comes from.

        • Hi Breezy,

Nice name! Incidentally a relative of mine called his own lodge “Hurry Inn!”

Indeed all the chains offer only “factory-farmed, processed food” but to think Woolworths is better than the others just because they charge way more, have a super-slick marketing team, and good packaging, is a mistake. I felt the same way for years – shopping only at Woolworths believing that the higher price I was paying was worth it for the organic food – until I discovered the truth. And felt very betrayed.

Since I STOPPED shopping at Woolworths – indeed, all supermarkets for my food – my health has improved. A lot.

I feel happier to support genuinely ethical farmers who sell their products at markets – my milk comes from MooBerry, my cheese comes from Beatrix (owner Barry Sergeant is a wonderful investigative journalist turned goat farmer) my eggs come from my own hens, which are GENUINELY free to roam, enjoy pasture and munch on snails, my vegetables I grow myself in the garden, and any extra food I need to feed myself and my dependents I source from farmer’s markets. Delicious, nutritious and way cheaper in the long run.

I know restaurant and lodge owners here who do the same, having become sickened by the corporate duplicity.

Woolworths have done nothing but reneged on promises, made all sorts of untrue claims about “happy” cows, promised to stop confining sows in sow stalls, all of which have turned out to be false. I don’t support any supermarkets but I can show that when it came to “pasture-raised pork” Shoprite Checkers had the most stores that stocked an ethical variety while Woolworths had none. Here are just three links:

So thank you, Chris, you are quite right to point out the fresh orange juice nonsense. The best lodges provide genuinely fresh squeezed juice on the premises. It’s not too hard, surely?
