Earlier this week Mayor Patricia de Lille announced at the Cape Town Press Club that plans have been finalized to complete the unfinished Foreshore bridge, which will connect it to the N1 highway, 40 years after the completion of the bridge ground to a halt.
Mayor De Lille said that the completion of the bridge is an important strategy of the City of Cape Town to address the traffic congestion in the city center, requiring a five year investment. Working with Transnet and Prasa, the road from the unfinished bridge would run parallel to the N1 entry/exit road near the Royal Cape Yacht Club.
The Mayor is said to make a more concrete (pardon the pun!) announcement about the plans for the unfinished bridge later this month (now confirmed to be on 21 June). She said: ‘This is an ongoing process which is still under way. The outcome of this process will determine the possible solutions to address traffic congestion, to name but one‘.
Earlier this year it was announced by TomTom global traffic index that Cape Town has overtaken Johannesburg as our country’s most congested city.
The unfinished bridge received attention four years ago when students from the University of Cape Town Engineering Faculty were challenged to create designs for the unfinished bridge, and to change the derelict area into a ‘vibrant, mixed-use public space‘.
