BarorphanageAward-winning and rated as best bar in Cape Town, Orphanage Cocktail Emporium will close its doors as a cocktail bar temporarily from 15 November onwards, preparing for its opening next year in the new Speakers-Corner building on Church Square in the Cape Town city centre.

Orphanage opened its doors more than three years ago, and took its name from its location on Orphan Street (with trendy Bree Street) in Cape Town, the St Paul’s Church across the road having founded The St Francis Children’s Home in Athlone at the beginning of the previous century. A special cocktail ‘More Tea Vicar’ was created, and R15 of each one sold is donated to the children’s home, a total of R154000 to date.

Founder Katie Friedman said that ‘Orphanage Cocktail Emporium is moving into its next exciting stage of development, since our inception almost five years ago. As founders and originators of the vibrant Bree Street movement we are looking forward to focusing on our next challenge as first movers into historic Church Square‘.

During the time we have had the privilege of nurturing and working with a number of the best cocktail and spirits specialists in the world over the last few years, in particular the current international stars of the South African cocktail scene Ray Endean, Matt Mulholland, Assaf Yechiel, Nick Kumbarakis, Brent Perremore,  Caitlin Hill and Anil Sabharwal at Shaker Bar-school, as well as many others too numerous to mention, and not least our loyal customers. We humbly thank you all. Our door closes but another opens in the next chapter in Orphanage’s cocktail adventure‘, added Mrs Friedman.

Speakers-Corner is a specialist retail and restaurant space housed in a Victorian building on the corner of Parliament Street and Church Square. It will offer alfresco street level dining and house a specialist roof-top cocktail bar.

Orphanage will be available for hire during December for parties, events, seminars, and launches.
