Utopia Cape Town, Life Grand Café, Wolfgat, Clara’s Barn, ëlgr, Pier, Restaurant KLEIN JAN, and Post & Pepper Restaurant are eight restaurants that have been nominated in various 2022 Best Restaurant categories in Africa, presented by the World Culinary Awards.

All the restaurants nominated as Best in South Africa by the same Awards are all from the Cape!

In the Best Rooftop Restaurant category in Africa, Utopia Cape Town is nominated, one in four restaurants in Africa, one of two in South Africa, and the only one in Cape Town. The other nominees are NOMAD Marrakesh in Morocco, Panoramique Lounge Bar in Cameroon, and San Deck, Bar & Restaurant in Sandton. In 2021 Utopia Cape Town won this Best Rooftop Restaurant in Africa category.

In the Africa’s Best New Restaurant category, Clara’s Barn in Stellenbosch, ëlgr on Kloof Street, Restaurant KLEIN JAN at Tswalu in the Kalahari, PIER in the Waterfront,  and Post & Pepper in Stellenbosch have been nominated.

Life Grand Café in the Waterfront is a surprise nomination in the Africa’s Best Landmark Restaurant, but Wolfgat’s nomination is no surprise. Bushveld Terrace Hotel Restaurant in the Kruger National  Park is a third South African restaurant to be nominated. A restaurant in Egypt and one at the Victoria Falls are further nominees in this category.

In the Best Fine Dining Hotel Restaurant in Africa category Qunu at the Saxon Hotel, Villa, and Spa, and Level Four at 54 on Bath, are nominated, both in Johannesburg and the only South African nominees.

South Africa was nominated as Africa’s Best Culinary Destination, with Egypt, Kenya, Morocco, and Tanzania. DSTV Delicious International Food & Music Festival is the South African nominee in the Best Culinary Festival category. Silwood School of Cookery in Cape Town and HTA School of Culinary Art are the two South African nominees in the Best Culinary Training Institution category.

In South Africa’s Best Restaurant category Epice in Franschhoek, La Colombe in Constantia, Le chêne by Darren Badenhorst in Franschhoek, Le coin Français by Darren Badenhorst in Franschhoek, Overture in Stellenbosch, Table Seven in Salt River in Cape Town, and The Melting Pot in Grabouw were nominated.

Nominees for South Africa’s Best Hotel Restaurant in Cape Town are Azure at the Twelve Apostles,  Chefs Warehouse at Tintswalo and Himitsu at Camps Bay Retreat (the restaurant closed down in May 2022). In Johannesburg the nominees are Amuse-Bouche at Fairlawns Boutique Hotel & Spa, Aurelia’s Restaurant at Emperors Palace, Flames at Four Seasons Hotel at The Westcliff, Qunu at Saxon Hotel, Villa and Spa, Saskia Fine Dining Restaurant at Fusion Boutique Hotel, The Grill Room at The Oyster Box in Umhlangha, and The Grill Room at The Palace of the Lost City.
