WhaleTalesTourism, Food, and Wine news headlines

*  Robert Redford has been spotted in Cape Town and Franschhoek, and visited Cape Point Vineyards twice in three days earlier this week, writing in their Guest Book: ‘A calm elegance with good food and good wine and no hangover’.  He visited the Appelbaums at De Morgenzon today.

*   In a poorly written article, with words omitted and typing errors in the headline, News24 has reported that new Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom has appointed Zwelibanzi Mntambo as the new Chairman of SA Tourism, after the sudden resignation of former Chairman Frank Kilbourn.  There is no indication in the article as to the Tourism link of Mr Mntambo.  A Google search shows that no person by this name has business interests in Tourism, but that he was appointed by former Minister of Tourism Marthinus van Schalkwyk as Deputy Chairman of SA Tourism two years ago!

*   Jordan has won the first Novare Trophy for Top Terroir Producer, out of 276 wines entered, in addition to winning three national awards for its Chenin Blanc 2013, Sauvignon Blanc 2013, and Chameleon 2013, as well as a Top 5 Estate Wine category for its Chameleon 2013.

*    Graham Beck and Klein Constantia are the only two local Gold winners in The Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships, out of a total of 86, for their Blanc de Blanc 2009 and Methode Cap Classique 2011, respectively. Simonsig won Silver for its Cap Classique Kaapse Vonkel 2010.

*   Nederburg is using UK TV presenter Jimmy Doherty, star of ‘Jimmy’s Farm’, as well as ‘Jamie and Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast‘ with Jamie Oliver, to star in its UK TV commercials on Channel 4 and the Good Food Channel.  Retail promotions will link to the campaign, which will focus on food and wine pairing.

*   The City of  Cape Town is to improve the traffic flow in the Cape Town city centre, by resetting 111 sets of traffic lights.  More traffic lights at pedestrian crossings will also be installed, a R6,5 million project running over the next 8 months, to make the city well-run, pardon the pun!  The traffic light enhancement will benefit motorists, MyCiTi Bus commuters, and pedestrians (cyclists are not mentioned).
