* Chef David Higgs has been appointed as the chef for the MTN-Qhubeka Samsung team cycling the Tour de France, a 3344 km race through The Netherlands, Belgium, and France. It is the first Africa-registered team, with members Louis Meintjies, Jacques Janse van Rensburg, and Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg. Their nutritional plans have been designed by Dr Robert Child. Chef David is a keen cyclists himself, having done the last two Cape Epic cycle races.

* Five of 35 international trophy winners at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2015 are from our country, selected by 240 international judges: DeMorgenzon Maestro 2014, Elgin Vintners Pinot Noir 2012, Lomond Cat’s Tail Syrah 2012, Paul Cluver Marks and Spencer Ferracrete Riesling 2014, and Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Barrel Fermented Chenin Boamc 2013. France won 8 trophies, Australia 6, and Spain 4.

* No immediate effects of the introduction of the new visa regulations are evident, but ACSA says that it is ‘bracing themselves (sic) for reductions in key markets‘, reports Business Day. An interministerial committee has been announced by the Cabinet, led by Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigabi, only to discuss improvements to the legislation and not to scrap it!

* At the recent Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show Rustenberg was named the Most Successful Producer, winning trophies for its Five Soldiers Chardonnay 2012 and Peter Barlow 2009 Red. Spier was the runner-up, for its The Hutton Cabernet Sauvignon 2012, and Windy Peak Sauvignon Blanc 2014, both produced for Woolworths.
