* The FNB/Tourism Business Council of South Africa Tourism Business Index has plummeted in the second quarter of this year, dropping to 84 relative to its estimated Index of 97. It is the lowest Index score since 2011! Reasons for the Index drop are the reduced international tourism demand, electricity and water shortages, the Immigration Regulations, labour unrest, and the state of the economy! The estimated Index for the third quarter is an even lower 81!
* A SA Tourism Review chaired by former Tourism Minister Valli Moosa has concluded that the new SA visa regulations have ‘become a big threat to its growth in international tourist arrivals‘. The Review was commissioned by Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom. The Review also found that while the intention of the new immigration regulations ‘might be sound, the practical mechanics of compliance based on the current home affairs design appears impractical’!
* Highly regarded British wine writer Robert Joseph will be the key-note speaker at the Nederburg Wine Auction on 12 September. He is known as the ‘Wine Thinker’, and will share insights into changing wine production, wine pricing, and consumer trends. (received via media release from Refresh Connect)
* Bosman Family Vineyards has been named the winner of the Fairtrade Award at the International Wine Challenge in London, for its De Bos Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2014. * Durbanville Hills is going around the world, with ingredients sourced from various countries. On 29 July sausages from Germany and Spain will be paired with wines from the estate. On 26 August different pasta types will be served. Cheese-lovers will be spoilt on 30 September, with a tasting of four cheese styles. The 3-course meals paired with wines will cost R395.
