*  In what can be described as an election-friendly budget, Minister of Finance Pravin Gordhan announced ‘sin tax’ increases of 9 cents per can of beer, 13c per bottle of wine, 27 cents per bottle of fortified wine, 62 cents per bottle of sparkling wine, 9 cents per 330ml of cider and alcoholic fruit beverages, and R4,76 per bottle of spirits, reports The New Age. Cigarettes go up by 68 cents per pack of 20.

*   Shoprite has announced a massive expansion of its outlets, with another 101 stores to be opened before July.

*   The Stellenbosch American Express Wine Routes with 150 winery members has been named the Best Promotional Body by Drinks International at its 2014 Wine Tourism Awards, recognised for its ‘innovative tourism initiatives to promote the region and the myriad events and activities it has to offer’. *   Tourism authorities have called for assistance in stemming muggings in the beautiful Bo-Kaap in Cape Town, a popular tourist destination.

*   Bosman Family Vineyards is joining the celebration of 2014 Fairtrade Week from 10 – 16 March.   Bosman is working with the community on youth programs, drug rehabilitation, sports clubs, education, cultural clubs, training, and transport.  (received via media release from Manley Communications)

*   JC le Roux has launched a limited edition complimentary Le Good Life Collection of accessories given to purchasers of its MCC and sparkling wines.  In March a paper wallet will be the complimentary item received with JC le Roux bought at Spar and The House of JC le Roux in Stellenbosch.
