* The closing down of the South African Press Association (SAPA) at the end of March threatens press freedom, says the Cape Town Press Club. The Association is known for its quality coverage of events. News about South Africa and its neighbouring countries will now have to originate from foreign news agencies.
* SA Airlink has announced that its fares will decrease from Monday, passing on the fuel cost saving to its passengers.
* ‘Traumorte: Südafrika‘ (Dream Destinations: South Africa) was screened on German TV 3sat channel on Friday afternoon, a 45 minute programme singing our country’s praises. Cape Town featured in it, with visuals of Bo-Kaap and Cape Point, and described as a dream country at the tip of the Southern tip of the African continent. The programme is a series of dream destinations around the world, and was followed by ‘Traumorte: Namibia’. Unfortunately we could only see the first 5 minutes before loadshedding turned our screen to black!
* The BBC has compiled a report about Cape Town, which is driven by its business tourism and property market. Commencing with the Cape Town Aerial Cableway, which carries 1 million visitors per year, of which 45% are South Africans. 2010 was its worst year. Cape Town is the most popular tourism destination in Africa. With tourism growth has come property sales growth, affordable to foreigners due to the favourable exchange rate, but they make up only 4% of purchases.
* The growth in new Twitter followers was minimal in the last quarter of 2014. It ended off 2014 with 288 million Twitterers, having gained 8 million and lost 4 million in the quarter.
* Backsberg is hosting a number of weekly Sunday summer concerts, at R120, until mid-March. Hamburgers, lamb wraps, and Backsberg wines will be for sale. Bands performing are Bed on Bricks, Mean Black Mamba, Piet Botha & Akkedis Band, The Blues Broers, and Mr Cat & the Jackal. (received via newsletter from Franschhoek Wine Valley)
