Day Zero moves out by almost a month to 11 May, due to water saving by agricultural sector in the main!

What a good news message from the City of Cape Town yesterday, in its weekly Water feedback to its residents and to businesses. Cape Town Deputy Mayor Ian Neilson announced that it is the reduced usage by the agricultural sector that is allowing the positive water supply projection, extending Day Zero by almost a month, from 16 April to 11 May. An article I found on Facebook provides additional good news to the water projection, it not being clear if this has been factored into the latest Day Zero calculation.  Punitive water tariffs since 1 February may also slowly  be starting to show their effect. City of Cape Town admits that it cannot augment water supply in time to prevent Day Zero, implements Level 6B water restrictions!

One of the last statements by Mayor Patricia de Lille was her announcement of the most stringent water restrictions to date, effective from today 1 February, at Level 6B, reducing consumption to 50 liters per person per day, an admission that the City of Cape Town is unable to augment Cape Town’s water supply in time, to prevent Day Zero (now moved back to 16 April)! Cape Town water challenge and Day Zero: We will survive!

I was recently asked if I would be leaving the country on Day Zero, projected to be 16 April currently, something that had never crossed my mind! It appears that a large number of locals are making plans to leave Cape Town, and reside elsewhere in our country or internationally, where they will have access to water! Quite frankly, I wouldn’t miss Day Zero for anything, as Cape Town will be making world history in being the first city in the world to run out of water!  Continue reading →
