Restaurant Week Dinner at Gigi Rooftop, Gorgeous George Hotel, sadly not all gorgeous!

In writing about Restaurant Week and a client’s participation in it, I saw the offer of Gigi Rooftop at the Gorgeous George Hotel on St George’s Mall in town, and encouraged my friend Gary Peterson to join me.

Despite its name, Restaurant Week is a month-long eating extravaganza available at more than 100 hotels at very generous packages, from R245 for a 2-course Lunch and R295 for a 3-course Dinner.

Corona Virus: Lockdown Journey Journal, Day 10 of Level 1, 10 October 2021

Sunday 10 October 2021, Day 10 of Level 1 😷

Corona Gratitude 🙏

#grateful for a lovely day, dominated by the Cape Town Cycle Tour, which kept us at home for most of the day; for the first cyclists coming past at 8h00, being ready to take some pics; for locals encouraging the cyclists all day, even bringing their chairs and having a barbecue on the pavement in Bakoven; for getting two blogposts written for the week ahead; for two Bakoven walks; for getting my steps completed without any extra dancing this evening; for being allowed back on the streets at Continue reading →

Will Cape Town and Winelands restaurants survive until winter?

The only new restaurants which opened last month are Epice in Franschhoek, headed by Chef Charné Sampson, belonging to The La Colombe Group, and located in the former Marigold restaurant; as well as Tindlovu in Camps Bay. This reflects the state of the economy, 2019 being one of the worst years for the restaurant industry.

Chef Peter Tempelhoff announced the opening of a new ‘funky’ restaurant in Cape Town on Kfm over a month ago, but no further details of its name, location, or opening date are known.

Cape Town and Winelands Restaurant Openings for rest of 2019/2020 summer dried up? Reflection of the economy?

With rating agencies giving our economy a thumbs down, and our Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni painting a bleak picture of our economy last week, it is no surprise that there are few, if any, restaurant openings planned for the rest of the 2019/2020 summer season.

Exhibit A of Chefs Rikku O’Donnchü and Warwick King opened on Bree Street on Friday. La Chêne opened at Leeu Estates in Franschhoek two weeks ago. Cowboys & Cooks is running late in opening its planned new restaurant in De Waterkant.
