Cape Town and Winelands see host of new restaurant openings: December 2020 update!

 

Cape Town and the Winelands is experiencing a restaurant boom, with new openings currently as well as openings announced for 2023.

The biggest restaurant opening extravaganza is that of JAN Franschhoek, the third restaurant in the JAN Restaurant Collection, opening at La Motte in Franschhoek. La Motte is undergoing a major renovation and changes at its wine estate, with a Bread-related Café & Deli opening  in the La Motte Manor House in February 2023. Chef Chris Erasmus is working with La Motte as a consultant, until February. September Restaurant Opening and Closing Update: Cape Town and Winelands

 

 

Despite it being Spring, few new restaurants are known to be opening, or planning to open, in Cape Town and the Winelands.

The biggest recent restaurant openings are Dusk in Stellenbosch, a joint venture by Chefs Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austen. Chef Peter Tempelhoff is to open a Japanese Street Food restaurant on the ground floor of Speakers Corner, the building in which FYN operates. New Cypriot Ouzeri restaurant highlights talents of Owner/Chef Nick Charalambous and team!

 

I spontaneously dropped in at the new Cypriot Ouzeri restaurant on Wale Street last night, and learnt about Cypriot food, about its owner Chef Nick Charalambous, and tasted dishes from Greece and Cyprus I’d never heard of before.

Arriving at 18h00, with no one else present, the hostess at the door told me that they are fully booked, and was happy to send me on my way. I told her that I wasn’t planning to spend the whole evening there, and did she have a short gap for me. The Restaurant Manager was kind, looked at her Reservations schedule, and found a table that gave me a one hour eating time, which was perfect. Continue reading →

July 2022 Restaurant Update: Cape Town and Winelands, new re-openings!

 

New restaurants are still opening, or planning to open, in Cape Town and the Winelands, despite it being Winter.

The biggest recent restaurant opening has been by Chef Liam Tomlin, who opened The Bailey, a three storey Brasserie, Bakery, and two Bars across the road from Heritage Square. He has closed down his Chefs Warehouse on Bree Street. Ouzeri also opened last month.

Restaurant Artizian will open on Bree Street in August. Chef Peter Tempelhoff is said to open a Japanese Street Food restaurant on the ground floor of Speakers Corner, the building in which FYN operates, in September.
