City of Cape Town Sweet Service and Pick ‘n Pay Sour Service Awards!
The Sweet Service Award goes to the City of Cape Town and its Street Light head Faville Wenn, who made it his business to get the street lights in a section of Upper Fresnaye to work again, after regular outages over a period of almost two months. I reported the problem, which occurred two to three times a week, to the City of Cape Town and our Councillor Jacques Weber via Twitter, and was astounded that the Councillor implied on Twitter that I was lying about the street light outages. I copied him into each of my 20 tweets over the two months, and when I included Mayor Patricia de Lille he became really angry, and expressed this on his Facebook page, telling me to get her to fix the problem! The transparency of the Councillor’s disinterest is evident when he unfollowed our Twitter account, clearly embarrassed to see the Tweets of their non-performance! Seasonality: Cape Town and Western Cape Tourism discuss perennial problem!
Whilst it is good news that the Western Cape province and the City of Cape Town have workshopped the perennial Winter Seasonality problem in Cape Town and the Western Cape with industry players, one wonders if once again it is too little too late, discussing Seasonality at the tail end of Winter! The outcome of the workshop has been a promise that all stakeholders ‘have committed to working together to address the negative impact that Seasonality has on the industry’, a Cape Town Tourism media release states!
Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille said at the workshop: ‘We live in a global village and if we want to be a world-class city then we need to stop being complacent and only enjoying the benefits of tourism in our summer months. If we can re-position Cape Town as an all-year destination by leveraging Events and Business tourism, our incoming flight numbers, income generated from the tourism industry and jobs in tourism will improve significantly’.

City of Cape Town accused of subsidising Michael Bublé and One Direction concerts in Cape Town, did they benefit Tourism?!
The City of Cape Town has been accused by ANC councillors that the Michael Bublé and One Direction concerts, held earlier this year within ten days of each other in the City-owned Cape Town Stadium, were in part funded by the City, and ultimately its ratepayers!
Reported in Die Burger, the article alleges that R2,1 million of ratepayers’ monies were used to pay for tickets and security for the 19 March Michael Bublé and 1 April One Direction concerts. R243000 is alleged to have been paid to concert organiser ‘Big Concerts International’ (sic – the company is known as Big Concerts), a private company and dominant concert organiser in our country, for tickets, and close to R500000 for security, an expenditure which should have been the responsibility of the concert organiser.
