This afternoon the 2021 World’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S. Pellegrino and Aqua Panna, were celebrated in Antwerp, the first time since 2019. Noma in Copenhagen was announced as the number 1 restaurant in the world.
South Africa remains on the World’s 50 Best Restaurant List, despite The Test Kitchen having closed down last week. It represented our country on this List over the past few years. Wolfgat crept into the list at number 50 today, also winning Best Restaurant in Africa.
Restaurant Klein JAN is going from strength to strength, which is no surprise, given that it is owned by Restaurateur and Chef Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen. What is a surprise is that it is in the Kalahari Desert on Tswalu Private Game Reserve, miles away from anywhere.
Now Restaurant Klein JAN has received a new accolade, not for its cooking but for its beauty, being one of two South African restaurants making the 2021 Conde Nast Traveller Most Beautiful Restaurants in the World List, out of 39 restaurants in total, and accompanied by Wolfgat in Paternoster. La Colombe has been announced as Best South African as well as African Restaurant in the inaugural 2020 World Culinary Awards. Its sister restaurant Epice at Le Quartier in Franschhoek was named Best New Restaurant in Africa. South Africa was named Best Culinary Destination in Africa.
The World Culinary Awards ‘serves to celebrate and reward excellence in the culinary industry through our annual awards programme. World Culinary Awards is the sister event of World Travel Awards, itself inaugurated in 1994’, its website states.
I have been fortunate to eat at a number of the award-winning restaurants.
The Department of Home Affairs has just announced its revised list of Red countries, being the countries whose citizens and residents may not travel into our country as Leisure Tourists. The initial List of 60 countries was announced on 30 September, with a promise of it being updated every 14 days, but the announcement today is late by five days!
Very sadly Germany has been added to the Red List, making all the Big Five source markets for our country Red! Spain has been added to the List too, it having been a surprise that the country was not on the initial Red List.
