New restaurants are still opening, or planning to open in Cape Town and the Winelands, despite it being on the eve of Winter.
The biggest planned opening is that by Chef Liam Tomlin, who will open The Bailey, a three storey Brasserie, Bakery, and two Bars across the road from Heritage Square. His opening is running late. He has closed down his Chefs Warehouse on Bree Street. Restaurant Artizian will open on Bree Street in July. Chef Peter Tempelhoff is said to open a Japanese Street Food restaurant on the ground floor of Speakers Corner, the building in which FYN operates. The best news in 18 months of the Corona Lockdown broke today, with the UK announcing that it will remove South Africa and 46 other countries from its Red List as of Monday 11 October. Only seven countries will remain on the UK Red List on Monday: Columbia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Haiti, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela.
Vaccinated Visitors may enter the UK on the same conditions as those of UK residents, but may not have travelled in a Red List country in the ten days before arriving in the UK. South Africa has been on the Red List since December 2020.
A further positive step is that South Africans’ proof of vaccination will be accepted by the UK. South African travellers will have to show the results of a Covid Test. No hotel quarantine will be required from Monday onwards, a costly affair for travellers to the UK, having to stay in prescribed quarantine hotels at a cost of close to R50000.
This afternoon the 2021 World’s 50 Best Restaurants, sponsored by S. Pellegrino and Aqua Panna, were celebrated in Antwerp, the first time since 2019. Noma in Copenhagen was announced as the number 1 restaurant in the world.
South Africa remains on the World’s 50 Best Restaurant List, despite The Test Kitchen having closed down last week. It represented our country on this List over the past few years. Wolfgat crept into the list at number 50 today, also winning Best Restaurant in Africa.
In the third year of The World’s 50 Best Vineyards being announced, the 2021 Top 50 Vineyard List includes three South African wine estates.
Creation has made the 10th rank on the list, with Delaire Graff (Rank 30) and Klein Constantia (44th Rank) on the Top 50 List too. Creation jumped dramatically from outside of the Top 50 List in 2020, while Delaire Graff slid dramatically from 14th Best in 2020. Continue reading →
