*   The Knysna Oyster Festival has kicked off, running until next weekend, and is estimated to generate R70 million in revenue for the town and attract 60000 visitors, says Western Cape Minister of Tourism Alan Winde.  ‘The events economy is a big revenue and jobs driver, and a vital part of the Western Cape’s tourism industry. Specifically for our smaller towns, events bring much needed stimulus to their economy.  Domestic travellers are the bread and butter of our tourism industry. By supporting local events, residents are able to contribute to job creation in the area‘, said Minister Winde.

*   The music one listens to while drinking beer can influence its taste, says Professor Charles Spence of Oxford University, after conducting a multi-sensory study amongst 3000 drinkers. which tested the impact of sound, light, and taste. Colour and sound can affect the taste of wine.  The study was replicated for beer, with a similar finding.

*   One of the most interesting wines to be launched recently must be the Hidden Valley Shipwreck Shiraz 2009, for which the wine barrels were placed in the ocean at Cape Agulhas during maturation.  (received via Manley Communications)

*   Heston Blumenthal is opening a restaurant in the new terminal in Heathrow, due to open in June next year.

*   Graham Beck’s The Game Reserve wine range is dedicated to conservation, and each of the wines in the range is associated with one of the indigenous animals and plants on their wine estate in Robertson.  For each bottle sold in the range a contribution is made to the Wilderness Foundation, neck labels sharing this support of nature, wildlife, and wilderness, and its conservation. ‘The Game Reserve range of wines symbolizes our unwavering commitment to restoring balance. *   Chinese tourists have surpassed German and American tourists in expenditure for the first time, spending more than $100 billion on tourism in the past year, a 40% increase.  South Africa does not yet feature on the top 10 list of countries Chinese visitors would like to visit.

*   Distell’s earnings grew by 12% to reach R15,9 billion, and its profit by 10%, the weak exchange rate being a boost to sales, especially within Africa.
