* The Knysna Oyster Festival has kicked off, running until next weekend, and is estimated to generate R70 million in revenue for the town and attract 60000 visitors, says Western Cape Minister of Tourism Alan Winde. ‘The events economy is a big revenue and jobs driver, and a vital part of the Western Cape’s tourism industry. Specifically for our smaller towns, events bring much needed stimulus to their economy. Domestic travellers are the bread and butter of our tourism industry. By supporting local events, residents are able to contribute to job creation in the area‘, said Minister Winde.
* The music one listens to while drinking beer can influence its taste, says Professor Charles Spence of Oxford University, after conducting a multi-sensory study amongst 3000 drinkers. which tested the impact of sound, light, and taste. Colour and sound can affect the taste of wine. The study was replicated for beer, with a similar finding.
* TripAdvisor has launched its Smartphone App, which allows one to download the information before leaving home, and then to access the information for 300 cities offline in the travel destination, avoiding expensive roaming charges. The App will move between more limited information if the user is offline, or the full information if wifi is detected.
* One&Only Cape Town is hosting a charity auction dinner with the Forever Wild Lion programme of the Wilderness Foundation on 18 September, to counter the lion-bone trade. The South African lion population has decreased vastly in the last 100 years, to only about 30000. Tickets cost R750. (received via media release from Manley Communications)
* Strandveld Vineyards wines did well in the Tim Atkin 2014 South African Wine Report. The most southerly located wine estate in Africa, Strandveld scored 92 out of 100 points for its Pofadderbos Sauvignon Blanc 2013 and Adamastor 2011, and 91 points for its Syrah 2010. * A Plett Food Film Festival will be held in Plettenberg Bay from 10 – 12 July, with a number of food movies being screened, including ‘Babette’s Feast‘. Some of the movies are offered as a package, with a meal and movie discussion included.
