I spontaneously dropped in at the new Cypriot Ouzeri restaurant on Wale Street last night, and learnt about Cypriot food, about its owner Chef Nick Charalambous, and tasted dishes from Greece and Cyprus I’d never heard of before.
Arriving at 18h00, with no one else present, the hostess at the door told me that they are fully booked, and was happy to send me on my way. I told her that I wasn’t planning to spend the whole evening there, and did she have a short gap for me. It was a chance photograph of the entrance to Noah Café that attracted my attention to this secret hideaway in Tamboerskloof, not even seeing a menu or any other details upfront. I decided to book, and invited my friend Gary Peterson to join me. I felt transported to a Mediterranean desert island, captivated by its uniqueness.
Eleven months ago I visited the artisanal The Gourmet Greek cheese and yoghurt production facility on the Midlands Meander in KZN, meeting the hospitable Greek Dimitriades family. I returned to the cheesery on Thursday, and found that The Blue Cow Deli, which had opened eight months ago.
