Airline pricing jet-lagged

Airlines have been slow to reduce the cost of their tickets, or more specifically the fuel levies and airport taxes, making up almost half the cost of an international airline ticket, despite the dramatic fall in the price of fuel.

Airlines are blaming the sky-high oil prices of $ 140 per barrel, from which they are still recovering their costs.   They say it can take up to four months for a fall in oil prices to reflect in lower airline ticket prices.   For SAA the problem is exacerbated by the weakened Rand exchange rate against the dollar.

Comair, which operates kulula.com and the local British Airways flights, reduced its fuel surcharge by 20 % recently, reports the Weekend Argus.   Virgin Atlantic has decreased its surcharge from around $426 in August last year to $ 200 currently, for a ticket to South Africa.
