The Department of Labour’s new Minimum Wage for the hospitality industry is applicable from today, as detailed below:

The wage increase, based on inflation plus 2 %, does not take the credit crunch into account, as it was designed two years ago. Many a worker may wish to retain his or her job at the current level than to be made redundant due to a further financial burden on employers.

when will the new increase be published for 2010 – 2011 for the hospitality side?

The Minimum Wage rates go up from 1 July. I have not seen the new rate published yet. It is usually in the newspapers and in the trade publications. I will write about it as soon as I see it.
2010 – 2011 Hospitality wage increase.
It is very late in terms of budgeting for the increase, etc. Is it possible that the parties disagree and that a possible strike could be looming?

My domestic worker works twice a week for me from 07:30 till 15:30.
1. What is the minimum wage that i should be giving her?
2. Am i responsible for providing her lunch and tea or is she to bring her own?
3. If she breaks or burns anything, what is the general rule with this?

The Hospitality industry has different minimum wage levels to those of domestic workers. I would suggest that you call the Department of Labour for them.
You are not obliged to supply any food or beverages, but you may do so if you wish. This is not regulated.
Please check with the Department of Labour what you may deduct for breakages – this is strictly controlled for the Hospitality sector.

I am a waitress and work for tips and 4% commission only. Is this illegal or should we get a basic wage? I work from 8.30 – 4.30. And 5 days a week. This includes working on sundays.

I am not sure what your contract says, if you have one, and how often you work at the restaurant. My understanding is that restaurant staff must be full-time employed, which makes you eligible for the minimum monthly wage of R 1 981,48 (10 or less staff)/R2209 (more than 10 staff members). At worst, you must be paid per hour, at the minimum hourly rate of R10,17/R11,35.

The Minimum Wage for 10+ workers was R 2043.32 for that period.
