Burger&Lobster has introduced a generous daily Happy Hour offer of two for the price of one of specific beverages, as well as B&L Bar Bites. I and other writers were invited to try these ten days ago, on a Saturday afternoon, in a packed restaurant. Happy Hour at Burger&Lobster extends from 16h00 to 19h00.
I first experienced Burger&Lobster soon after it opened on Bree Street almost two years ago.
Restaurant Review: Burger&Lobster Cape Town serves burgers and lobsters only, with American twist!
Danita Alves is a sharp marketer, and extended the invitation to us. We shared the high tables inside the restaurant, as well as those outside, the seating allocated to the Happy Hourers. I shared the table with Marvin from Food Blog Cape Town and Jackie from The Jax Blog. The Bar Bites were served on platters, which we shared per table, while we could order the cocktails and other Happy
Hour beverages which we wanted to try.
On arrival we were directed to a Martini trolley, and were offered a Martini Rosso or Martini Bianco, both served with tonic.
During Happy Hour a selection of nine cocktails is offered, at two for the price of one:
# Bramblin about Town – Hendrick’s Gin, fresh lemon, and Crème de Mûre
# Chicito Brew – with El Jimador Reposado Tequila
# Most beautiful view, a name I was intrigued by, this cocktail being a lime-leaf infused
Belvedere vodka shaken with fresh raspberry purée, apple juice, orgeat, and lime juice cellulose, served on ice (right, R79). I found it too sweet, and didn’t like the cellular items in it.
# Coney Island – Bombay Sapphire Gin and vermouth
# Exotic Marigold – with Hendricks Gin
# Hawaii S.O. – Bacardi Carta Blanco, Pyrat Rum, and litchi liqueur
# Cucumber & Dill Martini – Bombay Sapphire Gin with Caperitif
# The Mexican – with El Jimador Reposado Tequila, and Patron Citronge.
# Dickie B – Nardini Grappa, Crème de Cacao, and Espresso
The Happy Hour Beverage selection also includes the following:
# A selection of sparkling wines (Graham Beck Brut and Brut Rosé NV, R85 per glass), as well as wines (Brampton unoaked Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc at R45 per glass, Brampton Old Vine Red at R46 per glass, Graham Beck Gorgeous Rosé at R48, and Linton Park Shiraz at R64 per glass.
# Beers on tap.
We were overwhelmed with the continuous flow of B&L Bar Bites, each costing R38, an unbelievably low price, designed to match the Happy Hour beverage selection:
# Spicy deep-fried prawn popcorn, topped with fresh chives and lime, served with garlic and herb aioli
# Bacon Mac & Cheese Basket (left), one of the best-tasting Bar Bites of those that I tasted. Mac and cheese balls infused with maple bacon are wrapped in oven-baked phyllo pastry.
# Sliders (right) are served as two miniature hamburgers: B&L bacon and cheese burger and Southern fried Sriracha-infused buttermilk chicken burger
# Mini Burger Bombs, deep-fried mini burger patties stuffed with melted cheese, topped with maple bacon, chives, and cheese. They are served with a home-made spicy ranch dip (left).
# Spicy deep-fried prawn popcorn, topped with fresh chives and lime, served with garlic and herb aioli (right)
# Mini prawn rolls, fresh prawns dressed in a light Japanese mayo with onion and chives, served in a warm toasted New England style brioche roll.
# Spicy buffalo wings, Frank’s RedHot spicy buffalo wings served with home-made ranch dressing
# BBQ Buffalo Wings, spicy honey and BBQ buffalo wings served with home-made ranch dressing
# Jack Daniel’s pork ribs, St Louis style pork ribs with a Jack Daniel’s glaze, served with home-made ranch dressing (left)
# Lobster and prawn bites, fresh lobster and prawns wrapped in a fried pastry shell with cheese, lemon zest, chives, and a sweet chili sauce on the side.
# The Burger Bites, the signature burger blend is wrapped in a pastry shell with cheese and pickles.
The cutest young Greek DJ Stephanos Vassili entertained us with his music, and is likely to be seen more regularly at Burger&Lobster Cape Town.
It was an unusual way to spend a late Saturday afternoon on Bree Street, and the generous Happy Hour offering appears to be paying off, the outside tables always being full when I drive past the restaurant in the afternoons.
