Chef Garth Almazan, former long-standing chef at Catharina’s at Steenberg, has announced that he is opening a new, as yet unnamed, restaurant alongside the Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel in Paternoster in summer.
The new restaurant will be created in conjunction with international property developers Simone Jacke and Deon Brand, who own the five-star Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel. The new restaurant is a dream come true for Chef Garth, having spent 18 years at Catharina’s. He trained under Chef Garth Stroebel at the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, worked at Shamwari for two years, and then joined Catharina’s.
The new restaurant is described in the media release received from Five Star PR as being a sixty-seater; offering ‘refined and contemporary West Coast cuisine‘; as having a sophisticated interior decor; and will reflect ‘authentic Paternoster‘. Views from the restaurant will be of the surrounding fynbos as well as of the Atlantic Ocean, with seating overlooking the beach. A wind-protected courtyard will shield visitors against the South-Easter.
Chef Garth will spend time visiting farms on the West Coast before his restaurant opens. He will use the time before the restaurant opening to explore the treasures of the ocean, and to connect with local farmers and fishermen, to find ‘accessible, unique and sustainable‘ produce in the area.
