Col’Cacchio ‘Celebrity Chef’ Series 2013: eat good, do good!

Col’Cacchio has announced the ‘Celebrity Chefs‘ who are endorsing its ‘Celebrity Chef’ Series 2013, none of whom are in fact ‘celebrity’ nor chefs linked to a restaurant!  Despite the misnomer, the concept of the promotion is a noble one, as R5 of each of the Celebrity Series pizzas goes to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, which does excellent work in caring for children from all over Africa.  A donation of around R100000 can be expected from the pizza promotion this year.

Last year I attended the awards evening of the Col’Cacchio Pizza Challenge, in which pizza lovers competed for the honour of having their pizza added to the Col’Cacchio menu for the month of August, alongside pizzas designed by Chef Chris Erasmus from Pierneef à La Motte, Chef Jackie Cameron from Hartford House, and Chef Coco Reinarhz of Sel et Poivre.  This year Col’Cacchio has called for pizza lovers to enter their Pizza Challenge Live, an ‘online reality show’, the winner of which will have their pizza design added to the Col’Cacchio menu in August.

Liam Tomlin, owner of the Chef’s Warehouse and Cookery School in Cape Town, and ex-co-owner of Liam Tomlin Food in Franschhoek, has kicked off the 2013 series in May, with a Vietnamese style pizza he has called ‘Lau-Ling‘, which has an Asian sauce base, to which is added Basmati rice, minced chicken, mint, coriander, shallots, crispy onion, spring onion, fresh basil, chili, and sesame seeds, which is served with a centre salad of vermicelli.  Tomlin is very low-key in Cape Town, having been a high-profile co-owner and chef in Sydney of award-winning Bancs restaurant.  He has written three cookery books.  His pizza costs R70.

David Grier is best known as a marathon runner, which he often combines with charity, so the participation in the pizza challenge would be a natural fit for him.  His pizza is called ‘Gianchaka’, and the pizza creation reflects him as an extreme adventurer, having run along the Great Wall of China and through India.  He has been a chef and owned restaurants, and is a speaker and consultant now.  His pizza has an Indian spiced base, topped with silken chicken tikka, spring onion, coriander, pineapple, and chili salsa, served with a mint and coriander yoghurt.  His pizza costs R80, and is offered in June.

Charly’s Bakery is well-known and loved in Cape Town, a mother and daughter team making creative special celebration cakes in the main.  The bakery became really famous when it featured in the reality series ‘Charly’s Cake Angels‘, sharing the love and stress that goes into making the specialist cakes and getting them to the church… or elsewhere on time! Their ‘Dangwhoodle’ pizza costs R85, and has a tomato base, topped with fior di latte mozzarella, roasted cherry tomatoes, Italian parmesan, grilled artichokes, and is finished off with a basil pesto balsamic glaze. Their pizza will be offered in July.

We commend Col’Cacchio and the participants in getting involved in this worthy promotion, and the good work it will help the Red Cross Children’s Hospital do.
