I saw an Instagram Story by JAN Restaurant Head Chef Scott Armstrong this morning that the restaurant was awarded a Michelin Star for the sixth year running. Congratulations to Executive Chef and owner Jan-Hendrik van der Westhuizen and his team for this huge accolade, our country’s first South African owned restaurant to have been awarded a Michelin Star.

JAN restaurant was first awarded a one-star by Michelin in 2016, seven months after I ate at the restaurant for the first time. Since then it has been awarded a Star each year, making this the sixth year running that the accolade has been received.

The 2021 Michelin Star Awards were broadcast via Facebook, the first time in its 30 year history that restaurant representatives have not gathered in Paris to receive their coveted stars. Michelin had promised that it would not demote any three-Star restaurants in 2021, given the tough conditions under which French restaurants operated during the Covid Lockdown last year, restaurants still being closed during France’s current Lockdown regulations.  Michelin stars were only removed

this year from restaurants which closed down, or which changed their dining concept.  A total of 30 three-star restaurants are on the French List.  About 600 French restaurants have one, two, or three stars.

A background to the restaurant and our South African Chef, the first of only two South African chefs heading up a Michelin star restaurant, follows below:

The evaluation of restaurants by Michelin inspectors was the subject of a Blogpost which I wrote in 2019:
