For the second year running I have been lucky to have received a delivery of a Festive Parcel from Chef Mynhardt Joubert’s Mynhardt Restaurant in Paarl. The aim of the delivery is to help publicise the good work Chef Mynhardt is doing in baking and selling the Christmas Fruitcakes, proceeds of which will go to support two charities: Butterfly House and Helpende Handjies.
In addition to sending a fully baked Christmas fruit cake, the festive parcel contained a host of ingredients as well as a recipe, so that recipients can bake one too. In addition, a Christmas wreath decorated the parcel delivered to my home, serving me well as an Advent wreath. A warm message from Chef Mynhardt accompanied the gift box.
In his message Chef Mynhardt writes that hope is the fruitcake’s special ingredient, making one believe in the impossible. His project is in its sixth year, supporting the two charities. This year Chef Mynhardt and his team will bake and sell 2000 cakes, 800 more than last year. The 2kg fruitcake costs R450 (excluding delivery fee), and is gift-wrapped in recyclable packaging. It can be couriered country-wide. Supporters of the Mynhardt Charity project are KWV, Sasko, Montagu Snacks, and Lactalis.
Details about the two Charity projects which will receive financial support from Mynhardt’s are as follows:
#. Butterfly House is an NGO with a resource centre, focusing on children and families ‘to create a hopeful future’, and is located in Fairyland outside Paarl. It is a safe space for families affected by unemployment, and breakfast and lunch meals are offered, as are other items needed, with a safe homework and recreation space. It offers a ‘Young Chefs’ program to expose children to catering, hospitality, the service industry, and good nutrition.
#. Helpende Handjies is based in Montagu, offering meals to 66 children daily, but up to 250 children can queue for food on a given day. Seasonal farm workers are supported during the ‘off season’, offering meals to 350 adults and children.
